A Reflection of a Teacher's Life

in Hive PHlast year

"Every child has a learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding." - Robert John Meehan

I want to reflect the beautiful quote stated above, that children have individual differences. Some bloom early and others have late development. As we are made special by God, each one of us has a different purpose here on earth.

Hello hivers, how's life going on? I hope everything is fine! Join me on my blog today,as I reveal my experience as a classroom teacher. My work is not easy with regards in handling many learners coming from different families. Having different behavior and different learning abilities.

It is my duties and responsibilities to assess my children accordingly to give the right remediation for them. I may encounter different situations every year but I made sure to cope up with it.

Teaching children is not a problem if only children can easily understand the lesson but as I've said, they have individual differences. To support the vision - mission of the Department of Education, I need to find different strategies on how to help learners with learning problems.

They prepared a flowers for me on my birthday.

How precious they are! Teaching them with love is the best way that a teacher can offer. No matter what their ability, embracing their individual differences can make my day smooth and unflappable.

One of the major problems I have is poor reading ability, which leads to poor reading comprehension. A learner cannot keep up with the class if he or she reads slowly, thinks slowly and acts slowly. To eradicate the learning problems of the children in my class here, are my strategies.

A remediation with literacy peer teaching.

I usually use our vacant time for oral reading remediation. This way, I can slowly develop their reading abilities. I ask a good reader to help with their classmates with reading. I give them a copy of basic sight words and then let them read a phonetic words.

Learners need follow- up at home to enhance their reading abilities. However, the problem is that their parents are already tired from working everyday to earn a living. They always rely on teachers, not knowing that they have obligations to their children, too.

Expressing difficult words through actions can help the learners think about how to read the words shown. Sometimes I exclude the slow readers from the activity and prefer them to read with me, one by one. It is really a long journey to realize how to improve the reading ability of my learners, but I know that keeping my fighting spirit will fulfill my determination towards vision.

As I see their faces, I know they are trying their best too. I always encouraged them to cooperate with me and spend their free time reading.

I introduce them with a phonetic words everyday, and I let them write on their paper for four days repeating the same words for mastery until Friday, when they will use their spelling booklet. I prefer to use a Horn Method in spelling. They will read and spell the same words for five days, and I am sure they will not forget about the words they encounter everyday.

Feeding time: Children are eating Benignit during their snack time.

To lessen up the boredom, we agreed to cook benignit. Everyone is very happy while eating benignit. I know that doing this can surely help my children gain weight, and hopefully I can feed them twice a week. I know that a happy tummy can bring a happy individual.

What are the contributing factors to poor reading ability?

These are the following factors:

  1. Poor nutrition: they don't have a balance diet, and due to poverty, they usually have a dried fish, hotdogs, noodles as their lunch. Whatever food they eat in the morning will last until in the afternoon. That makes the children insufficiently nourished with the required nutrients that the body needs.

  2. Family problem: some of them come from broken families, they are left by their gramdmother or grandfather. They don't feel the love of their parents.

  3. Illness: Children experiencing health problems might affect their performance in school.

  4. Poverty: is a situation where children sacrifice different needs in health, school, and social life.

  5. Lack of interest due to poor nutrition, poverty, and lack of support from their parents.

Reflection:

Being the second mother to my children in school, I always look out of their welfare. It has been my desire to produce globally competitive learners. May my passion for teaching always encourage me to teach my children with emphaty, patience, and perseverance.

Nurturing the new generations of learners is very challenging. Managing my time as a teacher and writing different stories that cross my mind in my free time is very productive on my part.

Until next time, thank you for spending your little time on my blog. God bless us all!
