"Are You Happy?"

in Hive PH2 years ago

I was going down memory lane, scrolling my photos online when I came across a certain photo of my college professor in Literature.

She's a woman: the Dean in our department, College of Arts and Sciences. A professor and the list goes on...

The thing is that, I have an inferiority complex and it's shinning through whenever I'm with brilliant minds. My self esteem cowers, and then I will shy away.

With her, surprisingly, I was able to proactively participate in class. I excel in group works and I tried my best to submit assigments on time. I wanted to gain her approval.

During one of our class, I could not recall exactly the topic but we were discussing about Women impowerment. It was such a remarkable discussion. We talked about gender roles and equality, feminism, sexism, misogyny, etc.

She gave her cents but mostly she let us express our thoughts and opinions about the matter. And then, when it was her turn to give insights about it, she shared to us something about her life.

She's in her mid-40's if I'm not mistaken. At her age, she's still single. For some reason, due to studies, work, and family, she was not able to focus on that area of her life.

I don't know what I was thinking at that moment, we were intently listening to her and then, I raised my hand, asked her the most inconsiderate and naive question, "If you don't mind me asking, are you happy, maam?"

I believe she was taken aback with it but she professionally and considerably answered me saying, "Yes, I am happy. At some point in our lives we may wonder how wonderful could it be to have a partner. But I have chosen this path. I am happy and contented."

Looking back to my younger and old self, I know I must have offended my professor with me, blatantly asking that question without considering her feelings. As we grow older, we realized and understand how vital it is to be mindful of others feelings.

The lesson is that, we should learn from our mistakes. Acknowledge that we made one and then apologize.

As she previously stated, wherever we are in this world is our choice. We owe it to ourselves to be happy. Regardless of what other people may say.

Happiness is a highly subjective concept. What you consider to be happines may not be the same for others. Go, for as long as it makes you happy.
