I have always wanted for my two cats to be castrated. It has its health benefits that come with it. And the main reason why I wanted them to be castrated was based on a bad experience that I don't want to happen again.
I cannot vividly remember but I think it was a year ago when I lost my cat, Riri. He was a Persian-Siamese mix that was given to me by my cousin. He was a house cat, he was able to roam around freely inside the house and to its vicinity. He wouldn't wander far away from our house, when he is not inside, he would just sit in front of the house near our perimeter fence. Then came one day when we lost him. I didn't know what was the reason for his disappearance but there are only two reasons that I think of: (1) he got stolen and (2) he was already looking for a partner and was not able to get back home.
At that time when he was still with us, he was already a young adult and I knew that not so long that he would want to find a mating partner. I was already thinking of getting him castrated at that time but I also thought that at his age, he was still so young that he would not recover from surgery. But my doubts led to his disappearance and from that forward, we never found him. And that's why I promised myself that I will never lose one of my pets anymore.
Here's Shaun after his surgery. He was still groggy form the anesthesia. He is now doing well, making less noise and gaining a bit of weight.
Taffy has always been the cutest! I just know that he was well behaved all throughout the surgery. He is now so big!
Anyway, I had my cats castrated at our department. Annually, we celebrate Veterinary Medicine Week and it comes with a lot of activities including veterinary missions that come with free castration to dogs and cats and also free anti-rabies vaccines. Since my cats were already vaccinated, I opted to just avail the free castration. All in all, I brought three cats with me, two of which are mine and the other one was owned by my aunt.
I'd like to discuss also what is castration? It is the surgical removal of the testicles of animals. This procedure is done to prevent reproduction and it also comes with health benefits. Castration not just prevents unwanted increase in animal population but also removes the risk of having testicular cancer in animals. Additionally, it reduces the roaming activities of our pets specially for dogs and cats. It also minimizes noise and urination that animals use for markings. Since their roaming activities has been removed or reduced, we know for sure that our pets are just in the vicinity of our place, probably taking a nap somewhere.
But aside from the benefits of castration, there are also disadvantages to it. (1) Our pets can potentially gain weight leading to obesity and (2) It is permanent, meaning they can no longer reproduce. That is also why there is so much consideration in deciding to castrate or not.
As for me, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages of having my cats castrated. Obesity can be prevented by exercise and I have long decided that I do not want to breed cats. Two are enough to enjoy and to take care of.
I would want each and every one of us fur parents to consider having our pets neutered (whether it be castrating (male animals) or spaying (female animals). This is a great way to prevent unwanted offspring and also to lessen the amount of stray dogs and cats in the streets.
Let us all take part in responsible pet ownership. Also, let us both protect ourselves and our pets from rabies by having them vaccinated.
That's all. I hope you learned something from this blog.

Our two adopted ladies were spayed too Med and I can attest that they are more bochog than the other cats roaming around the vicinity.
I think one of the problems that some folks have is the cost of the spay/neuter services when we inquired to a local vet the cost range from 3k PHP to 6K PHP antibiotics included so if there's a free program with the government that is the time that we can only get some.
@romeskie another fur parent oh
Yup! Grab the chance when there are veterinary medical missions or when clinics offer low cost neutering of pets during their anniversaries. Sulit talaga in the long run to get our pets neutered since the risk of getting illnesses are low.
