Giving my kids phone due to alarming Rampant Killings and Kidnappings

in Hive PH6 days ago

I don't know but I have been hearing news about killings and kidnappings around the Philippines lately, some were related to drugs and people who have lost their minds and soul to it.

I have paid little attention to it, but J am sacred because I have 3 kids that goes to school and I always pray for their safety and health.

My son only has a 7:30-9am school schedule and my husband works hard to fetch him after school. My grade 1 daughter has school from 7 am to 11:30, and to make sure she is safe, I always told her to go to her sister's classroom who has a class schedule from 6 am to 12 noon.

To make sure I would know what they are up to after their school was done, I gave my grade 1 daughter a simple phone, enough to call her and gave her a non-expiring pack for calls incase she needs to call me, but I don't know if she know how to do it yet.

As for my eldest daughter, I gave her an old phone back then but I had a hard time calling her because the speaker was broken and she could not hear me. ⁰The data connection also is slow and I could not put a Dito Sim on the phone; other Data providers were very expensive and only last up to 7 days.

To solve the problem, I let her borrow a phone which was provided by my work, it was an old phone; Samsung a02 phone, laggy but can do for calls and can be used with Dito sim cards.

To control her use of the phone, I uninstalled YouTube, movie box and left it with a few games which I limited using parental control. Games and apps are limited and I only gave her 3 hours use for her phone. Good thing it can be adjusted remotely thru family link app and I can unlock it whenever there is a need to do so. What's even better is that calls can come thru even when the phone is locked and I can call her everytime I need to.

To be able to remember the tasks I gave myself, I put several alarms so that when it hit, I would be calling my kids and see to it that they are safe.

One more thing that giving them phone was beneficial is that they can notify me whenever they are near our house so I could call my sister to help them cross the merging highway. It's really scary for me to think of them crossing the highway alone and having my sister help them gives me peace.

I even thought of quitting my job, working home or remotely if I could find any job where I could do that so I could monitor them and see to it that they are always safe. I could not afford this yet but I pray that God will give me something so I could do these all above.

What measures do you take to make your children safe?

It is normal for a mother to worry for the safety of her children. As for measures, you made a great start by strengthening your communication with your children. How about connecting with other parents with similar concerns? Share also your concerns with school administrators and maintain open communication with them. Teach your daughters to avoid secluded areas and walk with friends and trusted classmates. Advise them to say "no" or walk away from strangers or when they feel uncomfortable. Lastly, encourage them to be alert to their surroundings. I hope this helps.

I've done that too. The parents in their class have a group chat and each one looks out for the other including the teacher. I taught my kids not to get near strangers and told them to go straight at home especially when they don't have a trusted adult with them

You are doing great.
