La Selección de Fútbol de Cuba cayó ante su similar de Guatemala un gol por cero en casa de los chapines. Este fue el primer encuentro de la tricolor de dos que disputará en esta fecha FIFA, su próximo compromiso será contra el conjunto de Belice. Si bien el equipo pudo contar por primera vez luego de 10 años con una de sus principales estrellas, Marcel Hernández, tres de los jugadores importantes de las últimas convocatorias no pudieron asistir a esta, producto a lesiones, estos son los casos de Jorge Luis Corrales, Onel Hernández y Yosiel Piedra. Y como si fuera poco, solo se convocaron 21 jugadores, dos menos de los que permite la FIFA, sin explicación alguna por la Federación Cubana.

En el medio campo un doble pivote con Incerti y Karel Espino, por delante como enganche el talentoso juvenil Dayron Reyes. El tridente de ataque estuvo conformado por Marcel Hernández en punta, con Maykel Reyes y Paradela por bandas. El primer tiempo fue un monólogo de Guatemala, que tuvo la posesión y las oportunidades más claras. Un tiro libre de Marcel fue lo más cerca que estuvieron los Leones del Caribe del arco rival en el primer tiempo. Se vio un equipo cubano falto de ritmo, sin ideas y con sus líneas muy distantes, todo esto debido seguramente al poco tiempo de entrenamiento que tuvieron antes del partido. El gol de los locales vino de un grave error de la zaga cubana propiciado por la falta de comunicación a la hora de rechazar un balón en zona defensiva, esto lo aprovechó Carlos Mejías para robar el balón y quedar mano a mano frente al arquero a quien dribló con un sutil movimiento para marcar a puerta vacía.

El conjunto cubano comenzó mejor el segundo tiempo, su once no sufrió ningún cambio en comparación con los que arrancaron de inicio. Se vio un reflejo de lo que puede llegar a ser este equipo, aunque solo fuera por poco tiempo. El balón pasó más por Dayron Reyes y el juego del equipo fluyó mejor, fue de los pies del zurdo capitalino que salió la ocasión más clara de los de la isla, al sacar un potente disparo de 25 metros que pasó rozando el larguero. El otro gran chance lo tuvo Incerti, de mal partido, cuando tras unas serie de rechazos en el área cazó un rebote y le pegó al arco, pero cuando ya el portero estaba batido apareció un defensa para sacarla bajos palos. El banco de Cuba se movió, pero las sustituciones aparte de extrañas ( jugadores de una posición entrando a jugar en otra), no tuvieron ningún efecto en el partido. Para el siguiente compromiso se debe cambiar la alineación ya que hubo jugadores que no dieron el nivel, con más días de preparación se debe mostrar una mejor cara y el equipo está prácticamente obligado a ganar, teniendo en cuenta que se enfrentará a una selección de menor nivel.
