Hemos vuelto a saber de Michael Schumacher, el heptacampeón del mundo en Fórmula 1 no por su legendaria carrera deportiva, si no por un escándalo que involucra una entrevista falsa generada con inteligencia artificial. Hoy reflexiono acerca de este hecho y los límites de lo que se supone es real y lo que no.
We have heard again about Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion not because of his legendary sporting career, but because of a scandal involving a fake interview generated with artificial intelligence. Today I reflect on this fact and the limits of what is supposed to be real and what is not.
En los fines de semana de mi infancia, no había conexión a internet, una computadora o teléfonos inteligentes. No existían en aquella época (al menos los teléfonos) y de haberlo hecho, mis padres no iban a poder costearlo, lo que si había era televisión, la cual era mi único aliciente, pero con una oferta un poco restringida en cuanto a contenido. En aquellos días un canal nacional, transmitía la Fórmula 1 el torneo más importante del automovilismo y aunque no era el fanático número 1, sí que me quedaba instalado en el televisor hasta que pasara la pole position y después el gran premio.
Nombres como Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton y Pastor Maldonado no me eran ajenos y podía reconocer a muchas de las grandes estrellas de este deporte. Pero, desde hace muchos años me perdí del radar de la Fórmula 1, aunque todavía sigo recordando a las grandes estrellas de este deporte como el 7 veces ganador del campeonato Michael Schumacher.
En sí mismo, esté deportista alemán, es una leyenda del automovilismo y en los últimos días su nombre ha vuelto a estar en el foco, lamentablemente, por las razones equivocadas. Michael Schumacher había desaparecido de la palestra pública después de sufrir un terrible accidente de esquí hace casi 10 años. Nadie lo ha visto desde entonces, su familia ha decidido hacer silencio sepulcral de su estado de salud, lo que sí sabemos es que salió del coma y que ha estado viviendo en Suiza. Esto ha llevado a que haya un exacerbado interés y morbo por saber de la situación del expiloto.

In himself, this German sportsman is a motor racing legend and in the last few days his name has been back in the spotlight, unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. Michael Schumacher had disappeared from the public eye after suffering a terrible skiing accident almost 10 years ago. No one has seen him since then, his family has decided to maintain a deathly silence about his health, what we do know is that he has come out of his coma and has been living in Switzerland. This has led to an exacerbated interest and morbid curiosity to know about the situation of the former pilot.
Incluso Netflix, le ha dedicado un documental titulado Schumacher, estrenado en 2019 y el cual se centraba en su vida profesional. Ahora es Die Aktuelle, una revista de cotilleo y farándula alemana que ve la luz semanalmente, la que ha encendido la polémica después de un titular que prometía una entrevista con la leyenda del automovilismo. Lo hacía en su portada del número de la semana pasada en la que un sonriente Schumacher, era retratado en una instantánea casi real.
El problema es que esta entrevista fue generada con inteligencia artificial, para ser más específicos utilizando la herramienta character.ai, en la cual se elaboraron una serie de preguntas y respuestas en las que se aludían temas como la familia y su vida después del accidente. Por supuesto, esto generó indignación porque no solo era una entrevista “falsa”, sino que por primera vez un personaje público es suplantado de alguna manera por una IA. Esto nos plantea una serie de cuestionamientos a los tiempos difíciles que estamos viviendo.
Por una parte, tenemos a estas herramientas que sirven para ayudarnos aún más, pero, por otro lado, los bots y los medios sensacionalistas que abundan por estos días, utilizan también estos programas para hacer barbaridades de este tipo. Hace tan solo unas semanas se virilizó una foto del Papa utilizando un auténtico abrigo de la firma Balenciaga, esta imagen era tan perfecta que me puse a pensar en cómo la humanidad ha logrado casi eliminar por completo los límites entre la realidad y la ficción. Por supuesto, la imagen del Papa era obra de la inteligencia artificial. Pero, no era un caso aislado.

Now it is Die Aktuelle, a German gossip and showbiz magazine that comes out weekly, which has ignited the controversy after a headline that promised an interview with the racing legend. It did so on the cover of last week's issue in which a smiling Schumacher was portrayed in an almost real snapshot.
The problem is that this interview was generated with artificial intelligence, to be more specific using the character.ai tool, in which a series of questions and answers were elaborated in which topics such as family and his life after the accident were alluded to. Of course, this generated outrage because not only was it a "fake" interview, but for the first time a public figure is somehow supplanted by an AI. This raises a number of questions about the difficult times we are living in.
On the one hand, we have these tools that serve to help us even more, but on the other hand, the bots and sensationalist media that abound these days, also use these programs to make barbarities of this type. Just a few weeks ago a photo of the Pope wearing an authentic Balenciaga coat went viral, this image was so perfect that I started thinking about how humanity has managed to almost completely eliminate the boundaries between reality and fiction. Of course, the image of the Pope was the work of artificial intelligence. But, it was not an isolated case.

Elon Musk también había sido retratado con la congresista demócrata Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez en una imagen tan realista que engañaba a cualquiera en un primer vistazo. Lo mismo ha sucedido con una foto “fake” de Trump, siendo arrestado por la policía. Cualquiera de estas imágenes pudiera ser utilizada como combustible para ese ambiente de crispación política y social en el cual está sumido la humanidad, todas generadas utilizando inteligencia artificial. Y no es que quiera yo demonizar a esta herramienta, probablemente este mismo texto que hoy les escribo sea traducido por una herramienta IA o sea filtrado por otra en busca de plagio, por ejemplo.
En la actualidad, somos mucho más susceptibles a sufrir engaños colectivos con consecuencias que no estamos listos para medir. La familia de Michael Schumacher, por ejemplo, ha decidido emprender acciones legales contra Die Aktuelle, pero, ¿qué pasa con los responsables de difundir mentiras en la red? Lo que quiero es hacerte pensar, en como todos podríamos ser víctimas en algún momento de la Inteligencia artificial, pero supongo que es demasiado pronto para hablar de los beneficios y de las consecuencias negativas que a largo plazo puede conllevar este tipo de tecnología.
Michael Schumacher, aquella leyenda del automovilismo, probablemente hoy descansa junto a su familia en algún lugar del mundo y que siempre será recordado en la historia de la Fórmula 1, merece respeto a su imagen y a su privacidad. Por más indefensa que parezca esta entrevista, creo que debe fijarse un límite, marcar un precedente. Este límite probablemente esté más ligado a la blockchain de lo que creemos, pero como todo, viviremos un proceso de ensayo y error antes de saber los pros y los contras, así es como funciona el mundo de ahora.

Any of these images could be used as fuel for this atmosphere of political and social tension in which humanity is immersed, all generated using artificial intelligence. And it is not that I want to demonize this tool, probably this same text that I am writing today will be translated by an AI tool or filtered by another one looking for plagiarism, for example.
Nowadays, we are much more susceptible to collective deception with consequences that we are not ready to measure. Michael Schumacher's family, for example, has decided to take legal action against Die Aktuelle, but what about those responsible for spreading lies on the net? What I want is to make you think, how we could all be victims at some point of Artificial Intelligence, but I guess it is too early to talk about the benefits and the negative consequences that in the long run this kind of technology can bring.
Michael Schumacher, that motor racing legend, probably today resting with his family somewhere in the world and who will always be remembered in the history of Formula 1, deserves respect for his image and privacy. As defenseless as this interview may seem, I believe that a limit must be set, a precedent must be set. This limit is probably more linked to blockchain than we think, but like everything, we will live a process of trial and error before knowing the pros and cons, that's how the world works now.
