La semana pasada y por motivo del 75 aniversario de la F1 se decidió hacer un show único en donde los 10 equipo presentaron las livery de lo que será esta nueva temporada próxima a comenzar en el mes de marzo. Esto es primera vez que pasa ya que siempre cada equipo escogía una fecha determinada para presentar sus modelos; ahora los vimos todos en un misma noche. Es muy raro que un equipo se ponga en exceso creativo a la hora de cambiar algo en la apariencia (eso es lo que vamos a ver hoy) ya sea por un tema de marca, patrocinios o quizás por un "temor" a los grandes cambios. De los 10 monoplazas presentados menos de la mitad llamaron verdaderamente mi atención.
Last week and on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of F1, it was decided to make a unique show where the 10 teams presented the livery of what will be this new season that will start in March. This is the first time this has happened since each team always chose a specific date to present their models; now we saw them all in the same night. It is very rare that a team gets too creative when it comes to changing something in the appearance (that is what we are going to see today) either by a branding issue, sponsorship or perhaps by a “fear” of big changes. Of the 10 single-seaters presented less than half truly caught my attention.
Me quedo con Racing Bulls, Alpine, Haas y quizás con la sobriedad del Mercedes o el verde del Aston Martin pero los grandes cambios los hicieron los tres primeros equipos mencionados. El resto sucumbió a la monotonía incluso desmejorando un poco con respecto al año pasado. Ferrari decidió incluir el color blanco y el azul gracias a las marcas IBM y HP, patrocinadores de ellos. Esta franja invasiva rompe totalmente la esencia y la estética del carro y de lo que significa un Ferrari y es que hasta en el alerón delantero y trasero hay otras franjas azules y blancas. Personalmente creo que la Ferrari dio un paso atrás, el rojo mate está espectacular pero no hace que se salve, parece un Alfa Romeo 2.0.
I'm left with Racing Bulls, Alpine, Haas and perhaps with the sobriety of the Mercedes or the green of the Aston Martin, but the big changes were made by the first three teams mentioned above. The rest succumbed to the monotony and even got a little bit worse than last year. Ferrari decided to include white and blue thanks to the IBM and HP brands, their sponsors. This invasive stripe totally breaks the essence and aesthetics of the car and what a Ferrari means and is that even in the front and rear wing there are other blue and white stripes. Personally I think the Ferrari took a step back, the matte red is spectacular but does not save it, it looks like an Alfa Romeo 2.0.

Red Bull, McLaren, Williams y si, Mercedes y Aston Martin decidieron mantener su esencia de siempre. Pocos cambios, de hecho el RB21 de Red Bull es casi un calco al de las temporadas pasadas. La realidad es que muchos equipos se enfocan en las mejoras funcionales de sus monoplazas de cara a su desempeño en pista, dejan de lado lo estético ya que prefieren invertir ese dinero y tiempo en algo que los pueda hacer mejorar y ganar; sabemos que con diseños no se gana. El azul del Williams es diferente, más claro; hay más negro en el Mercedes ya pareciera que el verde de AM también fue tocado levemente pero nada de eso supone una mejora considerable.
Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and yes, Mercedes and Aston Martin decided to keep their usual essence. Few changes, in fact Red Bull's RB21 is almost a carbon copy of last seasons. The reality is that many teams focus on the functional improvements of their cars for their performance on the track, leaving aside the aesthetics as they prefer to invest that money and time in something that can make them improve and win; we know that designs are not the way to win. The blue of the Williams is different, lighter; there is more black in the Mercedes and it seems that the green of AM was also slightly touched, but none of that is a considerable improvement.
¿Quienes si mejoraron? - Racing Bulls. El nuevo diseño es una locura y es que el cambio tan radical que pegaron con respecto al de la temporada pasada es muy evidente; pasamos de un azul eléctrico a un blanco puro. Cuando lo vi quedé sorprendido y fascinado por lo bonito que es, el degradado de los toros azules, el toro rojo en la parte de arriba, la combinación de todos los colores; muy sobrio este monoplaza. Estos son los cambios que la gente espera, los equipos que se arriesgan y terminan presentando un diseño único y obviamente inesperado. Esperemos que por lo menos responda en pista y no se quede como un carro bonito y ya.
Who did improve? - Racing Bulls. The new design is crazy and the radical change they made with respect to last season is very evident; we went from an electric blue to a pure white. When I saw it I was surprised and fascinated by how beautiful it is, the gradient of the blue bulls, the red bull at the top, the combination of all the colors; very sober this single-seater. These are the changes that people expect, the teams that take risks and end up presenting a unique and obviously unexpected design. Let's hope that at least it responds on the track and does not remain as a pretty car and that's it.

Los otros que dieron un vuelco es la gente de Alpine. Pasaron de colores oscuros, ya sea negros y azules a estos muchos más llamativos y estéticos. La combinación de colores es muy buena, se ve muy bien al sol. Hay personas a los que no les gusta este carro pero a mi si, es de los pocos a los que considero armónicos. Acá veremos a Gasly y Doohan correr. Este Alpine la temporada pasada dio varias muestras de cosas buenas, sobre todo en condiciones adversas, terminaron sextos por debajo de AM pero creo que esta temporada pudieran optar por ese quinto lugar. Esto dependerá de lo que tan bien se adapte Doohan, claro está.
The others who have made a turnaround are the people at Alpine. They went from dark colors, either black and blue to these much more striking and aesthetic. The color combination is very good, it looks great in the sun. Some people don't like this car but I do, it is one of the few that I consider harmonious. Here we will see Gasly and Doohan racing. This Alpine last season showed several good signs, especially in adverse conditions, they finished sixth behind AM but I think this season they could go for that fifth place. This will depend on how well Doohan adapts, of course.
Y para finalizar me quedo con el Haas. Ellos siempre van entre el negro, rojo y blanco solo que en esta oportunidad el blanco cobró más protagonismo. Con respecto al año pasado también hubo un cambio sustancial en esa combinación de colores. Creo que este me gusta más y eso que solo invirtieron parcialmente el negro por el blanco. La cosa es que cuando tu ves que por lo menos hay un intento de cambio entiendes que el equipo está buscando llamar la atención, a lo mejor como no lo pueden hacer en pista pues por lo menos lo hacen a nivel estético. Haas contará con Oliver Bearman y Esteban Ocon, una pareja que pudiera hacer las cosas bien de no ser porque históricamente no ha sido un buen monoplaza y porque Ocon a veces se le cruzan los cables un poco.
And finally I'll take the Haas. They always go between black, red and white, but this time the white was more prominent. With respect to last year there was also a substantial change in that color combination. I think I like this one better and that's because they only partially inverted the black for the white. The thing is that when you see that at least there is an attempt to change, you understand that the team is looking for attention, maybe as they can't do it on the track, at least they do it aesthetically. Haas will have Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon, a pair that could do well if not for the fact that historically it has not been a good single-seater and because Ocon sometimes gets his wires crossed a bit.
