Finalmente la espera ha terminado y es que los octavos de final ya están aquí, mañana y el miércoles se llevarán a cabo los ocho encuentros pautados hace un poco más de una semana. Tras la eliminación de algunos clubes de nombre e importancia estos octavos para algunos, me incluyo, quizás están un poco descafeinados, hay partidos que en la previa no llaman para nada la atención ya que perfectamente pueden ser de Europa League en primera ronda. Sea como sea esta es la realidad la cual no es culpa del formato, los equipos que se quedaron fuera lo hicieron por su propio desempeño, el fútbol muchas veces es bastante caprichoso.

Pero creo que lo más relevante han sido las dos finales que han disputado las cuales ambas han sido victorias merengues, la 15/16 en penaltis y la 13/14 en prórroga con aquel Sergio Ramos pletórico. La Liga está en un constante sube y baja entre tres equipos, estos dos y el Barcelona; de ahí la importancia de cada encuentro entre ellos y sobretodo de su presente.
But not everything is bad, there are at least a couple of matches that look attractive on paper and may end up being great clashes. Let's start with the most obvious and the one that brings the most glue: Real Madrid-Atletico Madrid. This match has taken place on several occasions in the Champions League but the most curious thing is that it has been in important instances such as semifinals and finals. The last time was in the semis of the 16/17 season where the Whites reached with a 4-2 aggregate. But I think the most relevant have been the two finals they have played, both of which have been Merengues victories, the 15/16 on penalties and the 13/14 in extra time with that Sergio Ramos in top form. De los equipos más inconstantes que hay en la actualidad es el Real Madrid, este fin de semana perdieron en Liga contra el Betis cayendo así a la tercera plaza, mientras que los del Cholo lograron los 3 puntos derrotando al Athletic de Bilbao. Creo que los colchoneros llegan para mañana en mejor sintonía y con mejores sensaciones, aquel empate agónico al Barca en Copa del Rey y esta victoria del sábado hace que sin duda lleguen con la ficha de "favoritos", por lo menos para mi. El Madrid ha recuperado a Alaba pero perdió a Ceballos quien venía haciendo un trabajo decente. Por los antecedentes creo que será un gran partido, los rojiblancos tienen muchas espinas que sacarse en Champions y creo que estos octavos pudieran ser algunas de ellas.
Real Madrid is one of the most inconsistent teams at the moment, this weekend they lost in La Liga against Betis and fell to third place, while Cholo's team got the 3 points by defeating Athletic Bilbao. I think that the colchoneros arrive tomorrow in better tune and with better feelings, that agonizing draw against Barca in Copa del Rey and this victory on Saturday makes them undoubtedly arrive with the “favorites” chip, at least for me. Madrid have recovered Alaba but lost Ceballos who had been doing a decent job. I think it will be a great game, the Red and Whites have a lot of thorns to remove in the Champions League and I think this round of 16 could be one of them.
El otro partido que puede ser interesante es el PSG-Liverpool. Solamente hay dos partidos previos y fueron en una fase de grupos en donde hubo una victoria por lado. Creo que los dos equipos están en una situación muy similar en lo que a presente se refiere y es que ambos están muy sólidos en el liderato en sus respectivas ligas, llevan mucha diferencia con respecto a su escolta; se pudiera pensar que prácticamente tienen el campeonato ganado salvo exista una catástrofe. El Liverpool de la mano con Slot están en un estado de forma impresionante, era complicado cubrir a Klopp pero el trabajo del neerlandés ha sido increíble. El PSG por otro lado dejó de ser ese club ambicioso y creo que por primera vez se enfocó en hacer "equipo" de la mano de Luis Enrique, aunque no les haya ido tan bien en la primera ronda.
The other match that could be interesting is PSG-Liverpool. There are only two previous matches and they were in a group stage where there was one win per side. I think the two teams are in a very similar situation as far as the present is concerned and both are very solid in the lead in their respective leagues, they have a big difference with respect to their escort; one could think that they practically have the championship won unless there is a catastrophe. Liverpool with Slot are in an impressive form, it was difficult to cover for Klopp but the work of the Dutchman has been incredible. PSG on the other hand stopped being that ambitious club and I think that for the first time they focused on making a “team” under Luis Enrique, although they have not done so well in the first round.

Espero sea una eliminatoria pareja y atractiva ya que el PSG siempre en Champions se desinfla, no es un club copero de europa mientras que el Liverpool para mi es serio candidato a llevarse esta edición. Y para terminar tenemos al Benfica-Barcelona, un partido que en los papeles también está igualado ya que ambos son los líderes actuales de sus ligas, mismo caso que con el partido anterior. Al Benfica no le fue nada bien en la fase pasada por lo que acá los culés son favoritos, estos vienen jugando un gran fútbol y siendo un poco más contundentes en su juego. Junto al Liverpool son los grandes favoritos de esta temporada. El Barca ganó cómodamente a la Real Sociedad por 4-0 en Liga mientras que el Benfica hizo lo propio en su último partido de liga.
I hope it will be an even and attractive tie since PSG always deflates in the Champions League, it is not a European cup club while Liverpool for me is a serious candidate to win this edition. And finally we have Benfica-Barcelona, a match that on paper is also evenly matched as both are the current leaders of their leagues, same case as the previous match. Benfica did not do well in the last phase, so here the Culés are the favorites, they are playing great soccer and being a little more forceful in their game. Together with Liverpool they are the big favorites this season. Barca comfortably beat Real Sociedad 4-0 in La Liga while Benfica did the same in their last league match.
Unos octavos que puede que no sean llamativos pero que por ahí cosas decentes. Sin olvidarnos que el Inter, Bayern y Arsenal también están en disputa pero en partidos menos atractivos, por lo menos en la teoría. Veremos entonces que nos depara mañana el fútbol.
A round of 16 that may not be flashy but there are some decent things out there. Without forgetting that Inter, Bayern and Arsenal are also in contention but in less attractive matches, at least in theory. So let's see what soccer has in store for us tomorrow.

Pinta linda la semana con esta Champions que ahora si entra en el formato tradicional al que venimos acostumbrados desde hace años...
Mañana veré el derby de Madrid, teniendo en cuenta que, según mi memoria, el Atlético cada vez que jugo contra el Madrid en Champions, nunca pudo ganar (y algo me dice que esta vez no será la excepción)
En el Bernabeu, el Madrid se transforma sobre todo si de competencias europeas se trata, no importa demasiado el andar del club merengue en competencia domestica, en Champions es otra cosa, hace nada vapulearon al City de Pep (que también hay que decirlo, es un espanto de equipo). Como bien mencionas, el Madrid perdió a Ceballos que estaba siendo esa pieza necesaria para emular las funciones de Kroos en el pasado. Aun así, creo que Mbappe se destacara mañana.
El partido del Liverpool y el PSG no creo poder verlo.
