El pasado miércoles fue un día especial para el fiel seguidor del fútbol; 18 encuentros se llevaron a cabo en lo que fue el cierre de la fase de liguilla de la UEFA Champions League y en dónde la emoción estuvo en saber cuál de los clubes como Atalanta, BVB, Bayern Múnich, AC Milan y Real Madrid, tendría la posibilidad de ser parte de los ocho primeros puestos que proveen la clasificación directa a los octavos de final; lamentablemente para los clubes anteriormente citados, ninguno pudo alcanzar ninguna de esas posiciones privilegiadas y por eso están junto a 11 clubes más en el intermedio del torneo predilecto de clubes europeos, me refiero al Play-Off que se llevará a cabo entre la segunda y tercera semana del mes de febrero lo cual dictaminará los ocho clubes restantes para la disputa de los octavos de final de dicha competición.
Last Wednesday was a special day for the faithful follower of football; 18 matches took place in what was the closing of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and where the excitement was to know which of the clubs like Atalanta, BVB, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Real Madrid, would have the chance to be part of the top eight places that provide direct qualification to the round of 16; Unfortunately for the aforementioned clubs, none of them could reach any of these privileged positions and therefore they are, together with 11 other clubs, in the intermediate stage of the favorite tournament of European clubs, I am referring to the Play-Off that will take place between the second and third week of February, which will determine the eight remaining clubs for the dispute of the round of 16 of the competition.
Personalmente, no estaba de acuerdo con el cambio de formato para la competencia en la primera fase de este torneo, pero sería equívoco de mi parte decir que no me divertí viendo las ocho jornadas disputadas de la liguilla; entre relevantes y sorpresivas derrotas y victorias de diferentes clubes, me quedo con la dificultad que debieron afrontar equipos que en anteriores temporadas dominaban la ahora antigua fase de grupos y creo que justamente eso hizo que se creará por parte de la prensa deportiva un rechazo hacia el cambio implementado por Ceferin, presidente de la UEFA.
Ese regular desempeño de muchos clubes, entre esos los dos últimos campeones de la Champions, hace que ahora justamente sean rivales por un puesto en los octavos de final; creo que muchos de estos equipos no pudieron administrar fuerzas y concentración para afrontar muchos encuentros los cuales se podían percibir como fáciles, pero al final el fútbol prevalece y los cual mostró paridad entre los rivales y por eso ahora poderosos equipos económicamente y los siempre favoritos deberán enfrentarse para todavía ser parte de este prestigioso torneo de clubes.
Personally, I did not agree with the change of format for the competition in the first phase of this tournament, but it would be wrong of me to say that I did not have fun watching the eight rounds of the group stage; between relevant and surprising defeats and victories of different clubs, I am left with the difficulty that had to face teams that in previous seasons dominated the now old group stage and I think that precisely that made the sports press to reject the change implemented by Ceferin, president of UEFA.
That regular performance of many clubs, including the last two Champions League champions, makes them now rivals for a place in the round of 16; I believe that many of these teams could not manage strength and concentration to face many matches which could be perceived as easy, but in the end soccer prevails and which showed parity between the rivals and therefore now economically powerful teams and the always favorites must face each other to still be part of this prestigious club tournament.
Los octavos de final están en pausa hasta el 21 de febrero cuando ocurra otro sorteo más con los ocho equipos ganadores del Play-Off y así también tener noción de como será el camino hasta la gran final; 35 días de descanso de la Champions tendrán los ocho primeros clasificados, en cambio, los 16 restantes deberán saber cómo administrar a sus jugadores para esta vez tomarse en serio la competición y así no quedar fuera en este intermedio; tienen una nueva oportunidad y creo que eso brindará mucho más emociones y sabiendo que el duelo entre Real Madrid vs. Manchester City será el más atractivo, creo que habrá otros como Juventus vs.PSV, Benfica vs. AS Mónaco, Feyenoord vs. AC Milan y Sporting CP vs. BVB los cuales pienso que será muy igualados y en dónde tengo pronóstico reservado con quién gana y quién queda eliminado, es por eso que en esta fase intermedia, todavía existe emoción que será el preámbulo para una gran segunda fase.

Creo que fue un éxito este modelo hasta ahora. Vimos varios equipos que la tenían "fácil", pero se las vieron negras al final, sobre todo porque nunca vieron el mismo equipo dos veces, como pasaba antaño. Este formato obligaba a los entrenadores a crear planes tácticos diferentes cada vez.
Esa fue la gran clave, esa "facilidad" de no enfrentar al mismo equipo en un partido de ida y vuelta parece que dificultó a muchos, seguramente que la temporada siguiente lo harán mejor y eso aumente la competitividad del torneo en la primera fase.
