Hive Is Doing Great at Talent Land

in Loving HIVE ❤7 days ago

If you are not aware, these days (21-24 April) is Talent Land in Guadalajara, Mexico, an event that traditionally gathers around 40000 people, more or less.

I haven't been there, but it seems like a very complex event, with multiple attractions, 8 theme-specific "lands" and 7 stages, and I think there are concerts going on for those without tickets, which is how they attract such a crowd, most likely. One of the organizers of Talent Land is an old-time user of Hive and its legacy chain (since 2016) who is still active, @josepimpo.

Hive had a presentation on the main stage (which is a big thing, since there are 7 of them) through @starkerz, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/live/W_6iJ-CThc4?si=fQttRY3Th9BjErPO&t=9118

Really impactful the part of the presentation which refers to things we already have, in my opinion. Maybe the start was a little too abrupt with heavy stuff, but luckily the presentation quickly turned to more easy-to-grasp things. Hard to make a case for things about to come out, without accompanying screenshots. So... come on VSC! 😉

Hopefully, the non-English speakers saw enough in the screenshots to peek their interest to go to the Hive booth. And it seems they did.

In the last 2 days, we had 100+ users onboarded to Hive from Talent Land which used the special app created for this purpose. You can see them in this community. There may be others who joined Hive without using the app, which aren't tracked.

From what I've seen so far, Hive prepared really well for Talent Land:

  • an app created especially for onboarding new users and helping them create their first selfie from Talent Land
  • a Hive community created for Talent Land
  • separate guide posts in English and Spanish pinned in the community on how to create their first post in Ecency using Hive Keychain (to which they could easily be sent to)
  • a Hive booth where both English and Spanish speakers could help out
  • a friendly competition between people helping out to onboard new users to Hive at Talent Land
  • a contest for those who join Hive at Talent Land and do a few other actions
  • Hive Debit cards gifted to new users
  • Matt's presentation on the main stage
  • a workshop outside the Talent Land event at a nearby bar in the last day of the event
  • at least 3 places in the Talent Land area that were onboarded to accept HBD payments

Given the high affluence of people at Talent Land, it is an easy way to get a good number of new users. What would be important is that they stick around for a longer time, to become convinced more than if they joined online from an ad.

The presentation and the pitches at the Hive booth help... a lot, for the initial impression. But to stay they need to like what they see when they actually use the apps on Hive. Hopefully they do!

Thanks for sharing - interesting!
If 1% of the selfie onboarders would stay on Hive and become Hivians, that would be already a success! If not, then upvoting all those posts in that talent land community is at least a good way of burning Hive :)

Lol, so a win-win, no matter what! Seriously though, I hope we'll start to get more fresh blood in, the kind that sticks around.

I seen that community, looks like a lot of sign ups, let's see how many stick around

Yeah, that's the BIG question and hurdle at the same time for us. We can onboard quite a big number of users (we've seen it before, even higher numbers), the problem is to keep them active in the long term.

Following the presentation, I learned something totally new-to-me, ✨ the Distriator [timestamp 2:47:00]. This is I guess if you have a nice little business you want on the blockchain map, is like a POS system and a reviews app. I might try it out, but I'm guessing there's no businesses accepting Hive near me yet. It'd be good to see if the onboarding is something I can picture small business owners near me can put up with.

Distriator [...] like a POS system and a reviews app

Exactly like that... for Hive and HBD.

I might try it out, but I'm guessing there's no businesses accepting Hive near me yet. It'd be good to see if the onboarding is something I can picture small business owners near me can put up with.

Payments can be made with BTC Lightning on Distriator, via v4v.app, so maybe you have a business near you accepting BTC instead of HBD.

Would be really nice if a business near you would start accepting HBD, for sure. I have the same problem, so to speak. But maybe some day... I heard a supermarket chain in supermarket (with supermarkets in other places in Europe) started accepting BTC, so maybe that's the first step in the developed world and the bigger retail.

It's nice to see all the users get onboarded, but I wonder if they will stick around. I think that having good resources at starting out is good, but retention is probably another thing we have to consider.

Yes, that's a problem we have that hasn't been resolved yet. Internet marketing kind of solved this through follow-ups, email series, funnels, social media engagement, and gamification. Those who succeeded made the user feel important, rather than being used. Maybe we can learn a bit from that and not throw a new user into the wilderness, more or less, after they join. Splinterlands is trying to do that, finally, through the campaign mode (which isn't released yet).

It's a great event, we hope it has a good reception and as you say, they stay for a long time.

It certainly looks like something special. I hope the new users will find something they will appreciate on Hive for the long term. Thanks for your comment!
