Origins of Valentine's Day

The origins of Valentine's Day are shrouded in mystery, but the most popular legend tells the story of Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived in Rome during the 3rd century AD. According to legend, Saint Valentine defied Emperor Claudius ll's ban on marriage, continuing to perform secret weddings. Upon discovery, Saint Valentine was executed on February 14th.
