A year and seven months ago, I received some of the most shocking news: My daughter, only one month old, was diagnosed with craniosynostosis so her life was in danger. At that moment I felt that nothing made sense. The neurosurgeon was talking about a sum of money to operate on her, an outrageous figure, almost impossible to reach. I stopped listening to him and just looked at Alma Miuriel's innocent face through my tear-filled eyes.
This news dismayed my family and friends, my baby needed urgent help, she had to be operated on as soon as possible because her brain was growing but her skull tended to compromise it. The neurological damage would be imminent and would compromise her development. Thousands of thoughts crossed my mind, however, I kept the calm that is required to face delicate situations.
At first I did not have the resources to perform the CT scan that would confirm the medical diagnosis, so after talking to several hivers friends, I decided to write a publication requesting help from the community. Immediately, the solidarity samples arrived and I got the money the same day. A lump in my throat settled in my throat, I was immensely grateful.
The CAT scan confirmed the anomaly, so my family and I gathered our courage and proceeded to take the corresponding steps in institutions, foundations and health centers, both public and private, including traveling to the capital of the country to inquire in specialized hospitals and thus determine which were the most feasible options.
There were many days of uncertainty, of closed doors, of refusals, of sun, of rain, of meaningless bureaucracy and of an endless number of different elements that tried to make us give up, but our love was and is greater than any stumbling block.
