The Game Table

Once a week we have game night at our house. When I say game night, I mean Dungeons and Dragons, a not so friendly game of Magic The Gathering (Usually Commander/EDH), or some campaign my Cuz or @jacobtothe cooks up. For the last almost year we have been playing a Star Wars RPG campaign using the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars rule books. (If you want to check out some very entertaining tales of our shenanigans my cousin's blog has the gold, @sapadetzero).

All of this gameplay has taken place at my kitchen table. Now my table is not that big, and our group has swelled to seven or sometimes eight players. Let's just say when everyone is using their laptops to access our RPG sessions for our stats and Discord for gameplay, things are a bit, well, crowded.

My husband is a very handy, DIY guy. A few months ago he started perusing Pinterest and startled me while we were having our morning coffee by uttering a savage oath,

"I'm gonna build a game table!"

"Okay Luvey," I replied amiably, because I am used to him randomly uttering oaths about many things.

After a month or so of perusing game table designs, expressing shock and awe at the price of fancy game tables, and conceptualizing what he could build out of our reclaimed wood stock that we keep on hand, he went into build mode.

Our lives are pretty busy. We have very active teenagers, and even though my hubs is a supposedly retired military guy, he runs and entire youth shooting sports program at the local range along with being a 4-H shooting sports leader. The guy is busy. Oh yes, and we have a farm too.

Anyway, after a few months of him disappearing many mornings into the wood shop, he asked me to come take a look at the almost final phase.

I was blown away!

He thought of everything.

To begin with, the table has seating for 8. That means there are 8 cupholders, built in dice trays that are lined with red felt, and 8 plug ins since we live in the 21st century and table top gaming tends to require a device that needs charged at some point.

He had taken pieces of wood that used to be a roof and fashioned them into legs and the innards of the table, and then he took raw edged wood that came from our trees and was sawmilled here for the table top edges.

The big red felt lined surface is actually for a flat screen tv that is going to be installed, so that my cousin, who is usually the DM, can hook up his laptop and use maps galore without drawing them. There's a plexiglass shield that will drop on the tv, and another felt covered insert to place on top of the tv that will sit flush with the table top so we can play tabletop games that don't require maps.

The DM station at the head of the table has even more features, a fold up screen for privacy along with a pull out shelf for more player carnage delivering space. He even put in an HDMI port for the DM's laptop and put the switch to the LED color changing lights at that seat.

Did I mention that the table has its own lighting yet?

We had standard plugins on hand, but the hubs plans to switch those out with the plugins that have the direct USB plugins at some point, and I still have to pick up the tv that goes into the table.

But the absolute amazing thing about the table is the cost. Aside from some walnut stain and polyurethane, the cupholder inserts, and the felt, we had everything else on the farm. Gaming tables with features like this one cost several thousand dollars, and I am pretty sure we spent less than a hundred bucks on it.

And after playing on the thing for the last couple of weeks, let's just say I have been giving my super handy husband a few extra thank you hugs. Well, after game night that is, as we are all a bag of phalluses to each other during game play. Like invading horde level savage.

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's still pleased from having spent time basking on the game table's super fine wood grain surface last night iPhone.

Wow, I am so impressed! I knew he could build things, but now he has really outdone himself.

You know what? He still has things about it that he’s not happy with and was all sorts of grumbles about me doing a write up on it. I told him it was awesome and everyone will love it! I know he’ll be impressed that you are😊

It is a really sweet table. I look forward to when the TV is installed.

I’m glad you like it! You should have heard all the grunting and cussing over all the features needed in your part of that beast 😂

Impressive! Most impressive!

Thanks 😊 We shall see how it holds up over the next few weeks, a new campaign is about to begin lol!

That's an absolutely magnificent table! He did a superb job, and it looks like he covered all possible bases. Wonderful!

Awe, thank you! He really did put a ton of thought into it, and it’s a lot of fun to play on😊

Holy balls that thing is amazing! It's going to be crazy with the tv in it. He could start making these and selling them, you have a quite affluent area to your south. The whole reclaimed aspect would just bump the value.

Thanks! I can’t wait til the tv gets slapped in there! The campaign maps on a screen is so much fun😁

The affluent probably would dig them, but the question really is do I want to use my stash of reclaimed wood with them? Lol 😆

Players of many backgrounds will benefit from the knowledge you have provided.
