Ok so, if you don't know, today marks the start of the playtest for the next iteration of Dungeons and Dragons codenamed: One D&D. We don't know much right now since the PDF wont be released till 12:00 PST today. But from the interview with Jeremy Crawford we did get some information.
- First, something I mentioned in my Spelljammer Review, backgrounds get feats now.
- Humans and Tieflings can now be Medium or Small sized.
- New race called Ardling, which are higher plane race based on Animal Achrons
- Race no longer determines ability scores, Backgrounds do.
- Backgrounds are WAY more important, because you build them yourself.
- Feat will have level restrictions again.
Also sounds like feats will go back to being grouped by type, such as Combat or Metamagic.- Spells lists are being simplified into Arcane, Divine, Primal.
- Conditions and Inspiration will be changing.
- Critical hits might be changing, only players using Weapons or Unarmed can crit.
- Further Critical changes include, Nat 20s and 1s effect ability and saving throws, not just attacks
This is what I know right now, but the PDF goes live in less than an hour. You can sign up for the playtest at https://www.dndbeyond.com/one-dnd. Let me know what you think of the changes in the comments. Until next time!
Edited
So the PDF has been live for about 2 hours, and I gotta say its pretty good. I like the direction that stuff is taking for the most part. The Savage Attacker Feat still needs work in my opinion.
I asked the kids what they thought about this and no one knew anything (well the girl not knowing didn't surprise me, she's only recently gotten back into roleplaying, her last time was when she was 6, the boys maybe just didn't look into that bit of dndbeyond as most of what they use it for is character creation).
Youngest went and had a look as he's the one with the obsession and he couldn't find it, then got distracted by Spelljammer XD
So the playtest stuff is not integrated into the character builder unless someone adds it to the Homebrew section, which I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already started do just that. Its just the PDF doc that you have to download.
What does the youngest think of Spelljammer?
He thinks it looks cool but I don't know if he's able to read it (if it's free he might but if not then unlikely).
