Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa.
While I have been doing a LOT of Datasheet reviews since two big Codexes are about to drop - Astra Militarum and Aeldari, I have to remind myself (and the readers) that I actually play this game and paint these models!
I need to sometimes put the keyboard and mouse down and do some hobbying!
I am taking part in this year's @swordandboard 40k Slowgrow event once again.
My regular Space Wolves army is a Mechanized Space Wolf army that I have been playing versions of since 3rd Edition. It includes some Space Wolf only units and lots of tanks and Dreadnoughts.
Last year's Slowgrow I build a huge Infantry based Space Wolf Army.
This year?
Well... Space Wolf Dreadnoughts! A whole army of just Dreadnoughts and Iron Priests and Techmarines! LOL
Its all in service of expanding my Great Company and my Grand Imperial Army.
One of the jobs I have to do is to craft new Space Wolf Venerable Dreadnoughts. They can also be played as Wulfen Dreadnoughts. Space Wolves are the only Chapter of Space Marines that can do this, but it is a Castraferrum Dreadnought wielding a massive axe and a shield.
This is my current Wulfen Dreadnought that is in my Ironwolf Army. All his parts you can buy as is out of a box.
A friend of mine, Ren, gave me his leftover sprues from the Bloodthirster kit as he built a Skarbrand for his AOS army. He thought I would like to use some of the Greater Daemon bits as basing and trophies.
And then I saw the Axes and got an idea. It included getting some stuff 3D printed by my friend @xenowolfza which got me the right arms and 2x new shields.
So let me show you what I am working on!
Building 2x Dreadnoughts
I went into the garage and dug around until I could find all the parts that I needed.
2x Dreadnought bodies.
2x Blood Thirster Axes
2x 3D Printed Shields
2x Sets of arms and hands.
I want to show off how basic and dull these Dreadnoughts are now. Since I will be doing a lot of conversion work on them and they are going to look awesome later!
These are Dreadnoughts that have been laying around for years... so they are getting re-modelled!
Here are the 3D printed arms that hold the shields. The fur is a bit "flat" on the arms, but that's something I can fix later.
Also, there are the hands that will hold the shields.
On the other side, the arms that will wield the axes and the hands plus axe hafts.
I will have to do something to make these two dreadnoughts look a bit different. Space Wolves are always so unique per model... that is the plan!
Here are the shields!
These are 3D Print files for Space Wolf Infantry to have custom Storm Shields. I just asked @xenowolfza to oversize them for me. They look amazing!
Here is the one axe de-chaosified.
The skull had horns and a symbol of Khorne the Blood God on its forehead. I cut and ground these away. There was also a LOT of spikes which I clipped short and left the buts to look like studs. There were also some extra spikes at the top in the center that I got rid of.
The other axe was going to take a bit of work. A lot of spikes needed to go but I want to keep the one at the top. Skulls are an acceptable motif for Imperials, there is no problem with that.
But of course there is this giant symbol of Khorne on the blade...
... On both sides!
With a bit of careful filing and sanding, I have managed to get the symbols off flat. I am keeping the rest of the banding as it makes it look reinforced and tough.
And just to show how BIG the axe head is, there is a Firstborn and a Primaris Marine carrying the axe head!
This is going to be epic!
I will do another post like this once I have done a bit more work on the Dreadnoughts. I need to stop procrastinating and get on with it!
Thank you for checking out this post!
Cheers!
