Well, nearly done with all the reviews for the Aeldari. They have two Detachments pre-Codex, the Battle Host has been with them since the start of 10th Edition. The other one was for Grotmas.
So let's have a look!
Army Rule Reminder
The Aeldari Army rule is Strands of Fate. You can check that here.
The Detachment Rule is above and beyond this.
Detachment Bonus
The Battle Host ability is to give each Aeldari unit in your army the ability to re-roll one Hit roll and one Wound roll when making an attack in the Shooting or Fighting Phase.
This coupled with Strands of Fate makes for very accurate attacks!
Detachment Ally allowences
The Aeldari race is complicated. Like I have recently discussed with @aussieninja, their good and bad guys sort of intermix.
Below is how you can build different allied contingencies.
Ynnari
If Yvraine is your Warlord then you can include Drukhari units in your army even though they do not have the Aeldari keyword.
The combined points total for these units are capped, depending on the size of your army:
Incursion: Up to 500pts
Strike Force: Up to 1000pts
Onslaught: Up to 1500pts
Basically this means up to 50% of your points can be Drukhari. No Drukhari can be given Enhancements. You also cannot include units with the following keywords into that army: Phoenix Lords, Avatar of Khaine, Solitaire, Haemonculus Covens.
Harlequins and Corsairs working for Drukhari
If your army is Drukhari, you can include units with the Keywords Harlequins and Anhrathe in your army even though they for not have the Drukhari Keyword.
These units cannot be your Warlord and cannot be given Enhancements.
Their combined points costs should not be more than 25% of your army strength.
Enhancements
As usual, this Detachment has 4 Enhancements. A Character can only be given one Enhancement. You can only have one of each and only a max of 3 out of 4 can be used. You cannot give Enhancements to Epic Heroes (Named Characters)
Fate's Messenger - 15pts
Aeldari only. Once per turn, just after making a Hit roll, Would Roll or Saving throw for the bearer, you can treat the result as an unmodified 6 instead
Powerful! This model has a once per turn Fate Dice of 6 all for themselves for those three kinds of rolls!
Reader of the Runes - 20pts
Aeldari Psyker only. In the Command Phase you can pick a dice from your Fate pool, re-roll it and put it back into the pool with the new result.
Useful. You can re-roll 1's and 2's and possibly make them more powerful.
The Weeping Stones - 15pts
Aeldari model only. Each time the bearer's unit destroys an enemy unit, roll one D6 and add it to your Fate dice.
This is amazing! Gaining additional Fate Dice would make the army so much stronger.
The Phoenix Gem
Aeldari model only. When this model dies, roll a 2+ and at the end of the phase put this model back on the board as close to the position of death but not within Engagement range of an enemy.
Very cool. Could be useful on a mobile leader on a bike or with jump pack that you can bring back and then fly off to claim objectives.
Stratagems
Lightning-fast Reactions - 1CP
Used in your opponent's Shooting phase after an enemy has SELECTED its targets.
Select one of the units targeted.
The enemy suffers a -1 it Hit against that unit you selected.
This is basically an elective Stealth wherever you need it.
Phantasm - 1CP
Used at the end of your opponent's Movement Phase.
One unit of Aeldari Infantry can be targeted with this stratagem.
Your unit can make a Normal move of up to D6".
They cannot use this to embark on a transport.
You cannot select units that are within Engagement Range of the enemy.
You cannot then target the same unit with the Heroic Intervention Stratagem.
No doubt, this gives the Aeldari the ability to run away or screen or better score on an objective. Neat.
Bladestorm - 1CP
Used in your own Shooting phase on one Aeldari unit that has not yet shot.
Until the end of the phase, when this unit makes an attack that lands on a Critical Wound, improve the AP of those weapons by 2.
This can be deadly. It means that a 6 to Wound gives an additional AP and thus ability to cause damage increases.
Matchless Agility - 1CP
Used in your Movement Phase on one Alderi unit in your army that has not already moved.
This unit can auto Advance 6" instead of roll a die.
This is very strong. When you really need to get into position. A lot of the infantry weapons are Assault so running 6" and you can still shoot those weapons.
Feigned Retreat - 1CP
Used in your Movement Phase just after an Aeldari unit from your army made a Fall Back move.
That unit is eligible to shoot and declare a charge this turn even though it fell back.
This is a simple but great ability. Fall Back out of combat only to shoot and charge where you want to is a great ability!
Fire and Fade - 2CP
Used at the end of your Shooting Phase.
One unit from your army can now make a Normal move as though it is your movement phase. This rule cannot be used on Aircraft or units in Engagement Range of the enemy.
Its 2CP, so pricy. But it allows you to pop out, shoot and pop back in behind cover would be a great way to keep units alive.
Final Thoughts
The Battle Host has a great Detachment rule that allows you those re-rolls.
The Enhancements go well with the Farseers and using Strands of Fate.
When playing such a force beware units or rules that happen because of Crit Hits or Crit Wounds.
