Warhammer 40k - Review Library 256 - Death Guard, Death Guard Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor

in Tabletop / DND4 days ago (edited)

A Conduit for Desiccation!

The above model is officially what you use to build a Chaos Lord in Terminator armor. It does not however look like a Death Guard Character because its has been painted in Black Legion colours.

I have a better option:

This is Lord Lethius. He is actually a limited edition Lord of Contagion but one could use either to mod themselves a cool looking Chaos Lord.

Another option is of course taking the first model and putting Death Guard bits on it to make him look the part!

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

Now known as the Unit Review Library!

What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!

A New Season of Reviews - A Challenge accepted!

The nefarious trio of World Eaters, Death Guard and Thousand Sons are set to get their new Codexes next. Actually, the great FOUR are each getting their favourite Legion's new Codexes but Emperor's Children did not have an actual Index before.

Anyway. I was speaking to my friend @nicolaasmuller about how my Review posts might not make a lot of money for me, but that cumulatively and on average some of them do good and overall there is an average that at least means that there is good movement of income into the Hobby Fund and that it would grow from there.

We were throwing around some numbers and looking at the average of my last 10 Review Posts, 20 Review posts and 30 Review Posts and we could come up with a range of how much I should theoretically be making across a large sample size of completing the remainder of the reviews for the nefarious trio mentioned above.

So Nicolaas says to me something along the lines of: That would be pretty cool if you could do it in like, a month. Maybe do like 2 a day.

So I explained it would be a little bit more than that but sure... it would be cool... is that a challenge? And yeah... here I am... Challenge accepted. 😎

It is now Day 3 of the Challenge. I am a little behind but I needed to prepare. This is the 2nd post of that Challenge!

Fund Raiser - Helping a friend with funding for a Wedding!

This post is part of the current Fund Raiser where a friend has given me an offer to buy a collection of Warhammer models, the money will go to putting down deposits for his wedding arrangements.

After that I have two other hobby debts to sort out. This is all about to change as I had to cough up money from personal cash to the groom and now have real life bills that cannot wait. I will need to use some of my fund to recompensate myself.

I am collecting funds in the following ways:

  • Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD
  • Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD
  • Selling some of the collection to friends.

The total remaining is $468!
Every bit counts!

Back to the review.

The whole project has become quite the Challenge! With so many units to review in the game the consensus in the hobby community is that I will not have enough time to review all of the Datasheets before the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 came out.

I should have started when 10th edition launched!
625 days since the start of 10th Edition. (somehow I got this wrong yesterday... oh well)
This is Review #256, I am 369 reviews behind! (Lowest I have been is 314 behind)

Death Guard, Death Guard Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor

10th Edition Index

A Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor is found in the Chaos Space Marines Codex and the Death Guard Index. Like I say above where the model pictures are, they come in a standard box that make them look like Chaos Marines but not Death Guard.

The specialist Death Guard Terminator Characters have other weapon load outs and one would need to tinker a bit to either make those characters fit this datasheet. Or to embellish this kit to look like Death Guard.

And by that I mean make him look green and sickly and full of horrible disgusting details. He serves the God of Plague after all.

This is very similar on how I convert everything into Space Wolf stuff. I add wolf pelts, wolf tails, necklaces, runes, all sorts of viking(Fenrisian) details to the model to make it look the part.

This Chaos Lord can lead either of the specialist Death Guard Terminator units available to them.

This model costs 85pts to field and $35 to buy.

Let's check his stats.

Stats

Movement 4"
Toughness 6
Save 2+/4++ (armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 6
Ld 6+

Weapons

Standard Wargear is: Plague Combi-bolter and Plague-encrusted exalted Weapon.

The Plague Combi-Bolter can be replaced by the following:

  • Combi-weapon
  • Plague-encrusted exalted weapon

The Plague-encrusted exalted weapon can be replaced by the following:

  • Chainfist
  • Plague fist

Both weapons can be replaced by a set of Twin Lighting Claws.

  • The word Plague appears more here that the word "wolf" appears in my army!

Ranged Weapons

Plague Combi-bolter

24" Range, 2 Shots, Hitting on 2+, S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.
Rapid Fire 2 (Get 2 additional attacks if the target is within 12" - half range)
Lethal Hits (Hit rolls of a 6 cause an automatic wound)

Combi-weapon

24" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 2+, S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.
Rapid Fire 1 (Get 1 additional attack if the target is within 12" - half range)
Anti-Infantry 4+ (Causes Critical Wounds against Infantry units on a 4+ instead of 6+, it also wounds on a 4+ regardless of the target Toughness)
Devastating Wounds (When a Critical Wound is scored, the attack causes Mortal Wounds.)

Melee Weapons

Plague-encrusted exalted weapon

6 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S5, AP-2 and 1 Damage each.
Lethal Hits (Hit rolls of a 6 cause an automatic wound)

Plague Fist

5 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S8, AP-2 and 2 Damage each.
Lethal Hits (Hit rolls of a 6 cause an automatic wound)

Chainfist

5 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S8, AP-2 and 2 Damage each.
Anti-Vehicle 3+ (Causes Critical Wounds against Vehicle units on a 3+ instead of 6+, it also wounds on a 3+ regardless of the target Toughness)

Twin Lightning Claws

7 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S5, AP-2 and 1 Damage each.
Twin-linked (This weapon can re-roll Wound Rolls)

Abilities

Deep Strike - When set up from reserves, he can be set up anywhere on the battlefield more than 9" away from enemy models.

Chaos Lord

While leading a unit, each time any model in the unit makes an attack, re-roll Hit rolls of 1.

Desiccation Conduit(Aura)

At the end of every turn, every enemy unit within Contagion Range(I need to review the Army Rule to explain) of this model rolls a D6, on a 4+ that unit suffers D3 Mortal Wounds.

Thoughts

The amount of times something is called Plague this and Plague that... is probably going to happen the whole time with this faction.

This is a solid HQ. The Desiccation Conduit is a cool rule to just cause auto damage on tough targets. Being in a unit of Deathshroud Terminators in the middle of the enemy lines is where he wants to be.

His weakness? And that of ALL Death Guard Terminators? Movement. Movement 4... super slow. Most infantry are M6", Terminators and Gravis marines are M5". These Death Guard Terminators slog it out for 4".

Because of that, they usually Deep Strike, putting them within 9" of the enemy. A charge is 2D6" so they might make it.

Their other option (the expensive one) is to stick them into a Land Raider and drive them towards the enemy.

Their trade-off is that Death Guard Terminators have an extra point of Toughness more than the others. T6 instead of T5 means certain weapons have a tough time harming them. Lasguns S3 go from 5+ to Wound to 6+, Heavy Bolters S5 go from 4+ to 5+, Assault Cannons S6 go from 3+ to 4+, etc.

Re-rolling 1s to Hit is also a solid buff.

That makes 7 Death Guard Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 21.87% Completed. The total Completed is 27.94% Complete! Can I review them all?!

I agree. if you use a chaos lord in terminator armor you have to kit bash and mod a bit to fit in nicely with the rest of the disgustingly virulent theme of death guard. I hope the chance are good that they may get a new nurgle themed one when the new rules drop.

Indeed. Nurgle is quite forgiving... just make them full of wet-looking goopy stuff and drool and pus or vomit and tentacles or worms and you are 100% fine.

If you broke something on the model just putty it up and make it look like disease is pouring out. lol

More like chaos snail marines 🐌 😆

Hit them with the Thunderfire Cannon! -2" Movement! 🤣🤣🤣

You can tell by the expression on the face of the second model that Chaos gets to have all the fun 😁

!BBH

Nurgle is always a happy and cheerful fellow.

Is a Land Raider the only option? Could you use Rhinos or something else to get them into the action quicker? Does Chaos have cheaper vehicles? As the Big Mek in Dawn of War used to shout all time, WHY AM I'S WALKING?!?

You can't load Terminators into Rhinos.

Death Guard can put Plague Marines into Rhinos, but they cannot transport models in Terminator Armor. !LOL

Ahhhhhh, okay, that totally makes sense. Thanks dude!

Hehe, pleasure.

As far as transports go, this is all they have.

The other favourite of the Death Guard is to use a Universal Stratagem called Rapid Ingress. That way they Deep Strike at the End of the opponent's Movement Phase, meaning you then get to Move and then Charge into combat and catch the enemy.

Death Guard Terminators are hard to kill...

Why do astronauts use Linux?
Because they can’t open windows in space.
