Hello dear friends of Jewelry, I hope you are all very well. Today is a very special day in many parts of the world, as Valentine's Day is celebrated, so I couldn't miss the opportunity to share something with you and thus join the celebration of true friendship and love of life. I have made a necklace carved in wood with the figure of a heart, this heart is double, a large one and a small one, which symbolize love and friendship. About this symbol, some researchers suggest that the heart shape could be inspired by the leaf of a plant called silphium, which was used in ancient Greece as a contraceptive and aphrodisiac. This plant was highly appreciated in the city of Cyrene, where coins were minted in the shape of its fruit, very similar to the current heart. Beyond its uncertain origin, the truth is that today it is known worldwide, so here I briefly show step by step how I did it, I hope you like it.
Hola queridos amigos de Jewelry, espero que todos se encuentren muy muy bien. Hoy es un día muy especial en muchas partes del mundo, pues se celebra el día de San Valentín, así que no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de compartir algo con ustedes y así unirme a la celebración de la amistad verdadera y el amor a la vida. He realizado un collar tallado en madera con la figura de un corazón, este corazón es doble, uno grande y uno pequeño, que simbolizan el amor y la amistad. Acerca de este símbolo algunos investigadores sugieren que la forma de corazón podría estar inspirada en la hoja de una planta llamada silfio, que se utilizaba en la antigua Grecia como anticonceptivo y afrodisíaco. Esta planta era muy apreciada en la ciudad de Cirene, donde se acuñaron monedas con la forma de su fruto, muy similar al corazón actual. Mas allá de su origen incierto, lo real es que hoy es mundialmente conocido, así que aquí muestro brevemente paso a paso como lo hice, espero que les guste.

I took a piece of wood, which I made several cuts until it had a measurement of 3.5 centimeters on each of its sides, while I left 5 millimeters thick for the figure. Then on one of its faces I made the double heart design, but not before sanding and polishing all the wood well so that the drawing looked good.
Tomé una pieza de madera, la cual hice varios cortes hasta tener una medida de 3,5 centímetros por cada uno de sus lados, mientras que dejé 5 milímetros de grosor para la figura. Luego en una de sus caras hice el diseño del corazón doble no sin antes lijar y pulir bien toda la madera para que el dibujo quedara bien.

With my cutting instruments, I began with the first shapes to cut, first of all, with a small, thin knife, I made cuts towards the depth of the wood following the entire line. Once finished I started in the center of the figure, this decision is due to the fact that the wood being so thin could break, so starting from the center I take advantage of the strength of the wood and thus finish with the lateral sides.
Con mis instrumentos de corte, empecé con las primeras formas a cortar, en primer lugar, con una navaja fina y pequeña, hice cortés hacia lo profundo de la madera siguiendo todo el trazo. Una vez terminado comencé por el centro de la figura, esta decisión se debe a que la madera al ser tan fina podría romperse, así que comenzando desde el centro aprovecho la la fortaleza de la madera y así culminar con los lados laterales.

You can see what the first heart, the smallest, looks like after removing all the wood. In the same way, I start with the large heart, choosing one of the sides, and with a very small blade I carve and extract the wood until it goes completely through and there is a gap.
Pueden observar como se ve el primer corazón, el más pequeño, luego de retirar toda la madera. De igual forma comienzo con el corazón grande, eligiendo uno de los lados, y con una cuchilla muy pequeña voy tallando y extrayendo la madera hasta traspasar por completo y que quede hueco.

Next, on the opposite side I also do the same operation with the small blade, removing and extracting the wood. Although the process was the same, I had to be more careful since when removing the wood, the entire piece weakens so the risk of it breaking is greater, so I did this step very carefully.
Seguidamente en el costado contrario también hago la misma operación con la cuchilla pequeña, sacar y extraer la madera. Aunque el proceso fue el mismo, tuve que ser mas cuidadoso ya que al sacar la madera, la pieza por completo se va debilitando por lo que el riesgo de que se rompa es mayor, por lo que con mucho cuidado hice este paso.

The next step was to make the last cut to completely shape the heart, and it involves removing the square edges. As I said before, the piece has already lost its entire base when removing the wood, here the care is greater to shape the heart, little by little I cut with the knife until I reach the figure I had in mind.
El siguiente paso fue hacer el último corte para darle forma al corazón por completo, y se trata de remover los bordes cuadrados. como dije antes, la pieza ya ha perdido toda su base al quitarle la madera, aquí el cuidado es mayor para darle forma al corazón, poco a poco voy cortando con la navaja hasta alcanzar la figura que tenía en mente.

When I finished carving the piece, the last steps were to sand the piece very well until it was well polished and finally give it a bath of varnish, I did it 3 times so that the wood was very well protected, then I placed a collar and that was how it was finished.
Al terminar de tallar la pieza los últimos pasos eran lijar la pieza muy bien hasta dejarla bien pulida y por último darle un baño de barníz, lo hice 3 veces para que quedara muy bien protegida la madera, luego coloqué un collar y así quedfó finalizado.
What did you think of the result? While I was making this piece I was also reading that other theories suggest that the heart symbol could have its origin in the stylized representation of female breasts or in the union of two human figures. Whatever the origin, it is undoubtedly a beautiful symbol that has many meanings depending on each era. Today it symbolizes friendship and love, things that this world greatly needs to make it a better place. Que les pareció el resultado? mientras hacía esta pieza estuve leyendo también que otras teorías apuntan a que el símbolo del corazón podría tener su origen en la representación estilizada de los senos femeninos o en la unión de dos figuras humanas. Sea cual sea el origen sin duda es un símbolo hermoso y que tiene muchos significados dependiendo de cada época, hoy simboliza la amistad y el amor, cosas que le hacen mucha falta a este mundo para que sea un lugar mejor.
