Here I am at the end of this long-awaited visit, and I must say I am not disappointed.
The saying goes: "Every cloud has a silver lining," and this proverb rings true in this case. Indeed, following the tragic fire of 2019, the recent restoration work on Notre-Dame de Paris led to a major archaeological discovery.
In 2022, during preventive excavations carried out before the reconstruction of the spire, archaeologists unearthed several statues and tombs buried beneath the cathedral. Among these treasures, a lead sarcophagus dating back to the 14th century was discovered at the intersection of the transept and the 12th-century nave. This exceptional find provides an invaluable glimpse into the medieval history of this iconic site.
Me voici arrivé au terme de cette visite tant attendue, et je dois dire que je ne suis pas déçu.
Le dicton affirme : "À quelque chose malheur est bon", et cette maxime trouve tout son sens ici. En effet, après le tragique incendie de 2019, les récents travaux de restauration de Notre-Dame de Paris ont conduit à une découverte archéologique majeure.
En 2022, lors de fouilles préventives réalisées avant la reconstruction de la flèche, les archéologues ont mis au jour plusieurs statues et sépultures enfouies sous la cathédrale. Parmi ces trésors, un sarcophage en plomb datant du XIVème siècle a été découvert à l'intersection du transept et de la nef du XIIème siècle. Cette trouvaille exceptionnelle nous offre un aperçu inestimable de l'histoire médiévale de ce lieu emblématique.
