Recycle, forage, get a greenhouse

in DIYHub2 years ago (edited)

Good night, I hope you're all doing great and experiencing a fulfilling moment of your lives. Today I've finally managed to bring you a new forest life journal which had been on hold because the work here presented has been time consuming, as well as the fact that I've been feeding mostly off harvesting and foraging these days.

The weather also has been placing a lot of pressure into getting this done, but I'm really enjoying the process so it's not a problem.

And so it has happened... The first frost of the year has come and done it's vile acts. Autumn is only beginning we're already at this point. Don't want to even think about how winter is going to be. Goodbye to all hope of tomatoes...(maybe not, but that's for another post).
.

By some miracle, the cannabis plants made it through barely harmed.

To prevent them from suffering future frosts I improvised a few willow archs and put plastics on top, hoping this would be enough until I finished the greenhouse.

To cover up more area quickly I went to the edge of the road and hacked willow like crazy. Even did a public service because a sign became visible once again.

With the sides of the greenhouse covered with willow it begin to look like a jungle.

It was impressive to visit at night and feel how much protection a few plastics provided. I noticed this because my ears were very cold out in the open but under the cover they warmed up.

Next day it was time to continue working on the roof structure. Blessed with a sunny and warm day!

Since I had no plastics large enough to cover the whole structure I had to sew them. In this case I'm using home-made willow cordage but I also used recycled stuff I find walking in the fields.

My mother is the principal of a a rural school and she has implemented growing food as part of the educational program. Since they changed the plastics of a greenhouse this year, she brought me all the old ones; a big treasure!

Progress was much faster with those larger plastics, although they don't cover the whole thing either, they are larger than what I had.

Finally, the roof is completely covered!

I would love for this to be the post where I can show the finished work but there's still a lot to do and I've been kicking this post for a while now so I'll share future updates soon. Anyway, this is going to be an evolving project as I intend to put all my energy and mind into getting this to be warm in the winter, I am obsessed with that idea and will see it through, so there will be many adjustments in days to come.

I hope you've enjoyed this, I know I have and it's so nice to feel the warmth inside there. The plants are liking it too, and it's only going to get better. I intend to turn this into my base of operations so many following posts will be about this. Till next time!

Respect for your willow cordage!
A mate of mine used to fill up his greenhouse with piles of leaves in autumn. Interestingly they were sufficient to create a microclimate that made the difference. As for the "post that shows the finished work" ... hehehe, do you think you'll ever get there? I hope you won't, because what else could you show us afterwards?
How long are you planing to stay on the land this year?

Haha, yeah nothing is ever really finished. I just hope I can have a warmer winter with some fresh stuff to eat. I plan on staying till spring, though sometimes when I'm excited about what I'm doing I start thinking I'm never going to leave this place hahaha. But I have a countdown going on and there's 212 days left on it

Nice! Making it through one Winter means you could make it indefinitely. But what is that countdown about?

Yeah, I already made it through two winters here and in much worse conditions, so I can go and on. I placed the countdown because when we broke up with my partner I really wanted to run away from here, yet I didn't want to leave things a mess so that was was the time I had to recycle as much as possible and build fences. I was really depressed and my only goal was to lift a fence post daily but as I begin to heal I started doing more and more things again.

Now the only thing that keeps the idea that I should leave is the hopes of meeting more like minded people and either join their community or bring them here, whatever is best. Living here surrounded by people with whom I don't feel aligned makes me feel a bit trapped and crazy.

Yeah, having good neighbors is vital, not only out on the land but anywhere. It's good to hear that you've been through several winters, and your dedication not to leave a mess behind you is very admirable. So I am quite confidant you are going to get the ideal community that you fit perfectly into (and I believe Hive helps there as well). As I said, I would love to visit, but I'm nowhere near. But I wish you all the best for the... well, before Winter there is still Fall! :-)

Yes, and fall is a wonderful time of abundance here! Maybe I'll visit you one day! I'm really intrigued by Mexico and the native cultures there so it's one of the places I've always thought of visiting. Stay blessed my friend, wish you the best too

Love seeing what you can do with what is around you and given to you. Great job on the green house xxxxx

Yay! 🤗
