Testing my clay

I know that pretty much everyone must have seen me make these over the years. What's happening right now is that, I found some clay- which I cannot determine if its the cheap or quality ones. So I decided to test it by making a "sample sculpture out of it."

Yes. I could have simply thrown them away but looking at it, I would still be able to make probably 3-4 pieces of charm from it .

I am not going to show you guys how I made the top part of the popsicle. All you need to do is mold it like a popsicle and put a bit of black clay on top of it. I decided to use a wire because, after baking, the whole lot might be too fragile- it would literally break even when I casually hold it. That happens to those cheap, unknown brands. I am not saying that all well known brands are like that but, that is my personal experience.

Here I am making the beginning of a sculpture- another scrap clay- of white and pink from my previous projects.

Bake and here is how it turned out. I am not going to show you guys how I was able to make this because my main concern when I was making them are:

• is the clay too sticky( without adding clay softeners, room temperature is not too hot) that my finger prints are all over the piece?

• is it too fragile- aka easily breakable? There is a big difference between pieces that are not reinforced, incorrectly baked and cheap clay. They easily break regardless of the temperature and time it took you to bake.

• is there an intolerable smell during baking- I know that polymer clay has that smell but, cheap and underrated ones- they smell terrible.

• are there cracks on the finished products- it would indicate that the clay is old.

• how does the clay feels on your hand. Usually, they feel very solid and have that sound( yeah, I did mention that last time in one of my blogs) but more on it next time. I cant explain the sound but, there is this specific sound that a properly cooled and baked clay makes when you lightly tap it on any surface.
