An Eggscellent Egg Storage Diy Solution

in DIYHub2 years ago

I love my husband. When I start talking about something crafty he always seems to come up with a better idea and seems happy to help me do it. I really wanted an egg storage thing in the kitchen that wasn't an egg cartoon, and whilst my idea was to lacquer an egg box and add a few mushroom pics, he said 'let's make it out of wood', which we did.

The first step was to find the scrap bit of wood, a bit of hardwood from a very old dresser. Believe me the drill was SMOKING as he did it. I'd measured out where I wanted the holes.

We decided to go for 15 in the end, as there was room in the middle.

Then we cut it to size and gave it a sand. I glued an amanita mushroom on it that I had from an old book, decoupage style. I'd like to experiment with transferring pictures onto wood via photocopies but I'm not sure how to do that - do you know?

We then made feet out of the holes we'd cut, simply countersinking a hole and drilling through. I waxed the top with a blend of beeswax and olive oil. That's just what I had lying around.

In the end I was pretty thrilled with it and it sure looks sweeter than an egg carton.

Even better that it cost NOTHING - it was all scrap we had lying around. Sure beats the fancy ceramic ones I saw on ETsy for three million dollars. MInd you I wouldn't say no to one for a gift, but I do love the one we made.

Where do you store your eggs?

It looks really cool, and very practical!

Very nice! Using wooden pegs instead of eggs you could construct an X's and O's board game (instead of its traditional paper style of play).

Haha yes it did remind me of that and in fact I jumped eggs and stole the ones I jumped, but I was only playing with me and I won.

You take a win where you can find one. ;)

Three million what? Can it store all the eggs in the world? Unless that I wouldn't buy such with my money but as a gift, I'd receive with wide arms. Hehehe

I do love your craft TBH, it's beautiful and saves costs.

I found this on Pinterest just yesterday and today you're asking the same question. You could get an idea from here

This is really nice and creative, also very durable compared to the carton crates, reason why I love DIY's

Cutie! We used to have all different sizes of eggs in our chicken coop, I wonder what hole size I should go for 🤣
A mix of olive oil and beeswax, nice. You think it would be a good idea to do this for book shelves? Already sanded and turned out so beautiful that I don't want to paint them now. Was thinking of transparent varnish, but I always prefer sth more natural.
Mushroom detail is a must :)

Oh yes beeswax and olive oil is perfect. But remember whatever colour the wood is WET will be colour with wax. Unless you whitewash a little. But our dining room table, we always wax that and it develops a protective patina over the years.

Great, I will try it out soon:)
Thanks so much!

This is amazing , I think you should do more of it and turn it to a business , what do you think ??

Yes, I thought about it!!

This is something I would love to have in my house. The egg storage looks nice(like you said better than egg cartons) and classy. Anyway, have you intentionally put that garlic with the eggs? :D

Haha yes we had fun filling it with apples and tomatoes too 🤣🤣

Brilliant! And so beautiful with that mushroom!
I love that you reuse so much you already have in your house.
That's what people should do!!
Great job, both!

That’s cool… great work 😎
Better than the egg boxes for sure hehehe 🤭
