Upcycled Buffet for My Yoga Room : Trash to Treasure

in DIYHublast year

I really, really didn't want to upcycled this buffet but somehow I'd landed myself with it and my husband thought it was worth a go. It was pretty fugly. Here it's upside down - I didn't take enough pictures to show you how truly ugly it was, so you'll have to take my word for it.

The first thing I did was give it a really good clean and take off all the hardware. Then I took off the decorative strip at the bottom, which I like doing with my upcycled pieces as it immediately makes them a little more modern and light.

Next was sanding the buffet drawers back to wood and the top as well. It took a long time as the varnish was very thick and heavy. I did like the top and did a reasonable job apart from one corner where I sanded a little heavy and through the veneer - nothing that can't be hidden with an artfully placed book!

Then I rough sanded the doors and the rest of the cabinet. The paint I was using has a built in primer and top coat so I didn't need to sand more than that.

I decided to use a dark stain on this one for something different. I experimented a little on the sides seeing how it would look if I white or tan washed it first. In the end it didn't matter as I had to resand them as the bloody drawers stuck!!!

Whilst it looks like I did it all at once, it took months, as we were so darn busy we kept forgetting to get the right screws. We only put it together the other day.

I decided on the gold feet again. I really like them and they aren't overly expensive. This time they were free as the first delivery didn't come, so they sent me another lot, by which time the first set arrived. So I have a spare pair for another project.

I really, really love the handles. I'd ordered them to suit the legs in a bright brass, but also because they seemed to suit the idea of my yoga room with their lotus like plates. They look so nice against the white. It's not a pure white but a colour called Champlain - quite warm and seems to suit the dark top as well. I really love this colour. It takes me a long, long time to settle on a colour combo but when I do I think I get it right, so it's worth it!

I love how the doors cover the drawers, making it very streamlined and clutter free. It's for my yoga room so I didn't want it to be distracting as I practiced.

The buffet will mainly contain art and craft stuff - sticky tape, glue, scissors, stapler, various papers and so on. Stuff I don't use all the time, or rarely - likely sewing stuff bahahaa. The top drawer would normally be for cutlery, and because I couldn't remove the green felt, I just stained it with watered down black paint. With the stuff in there you wouldn't even notice.

On the right hand side there's cupboard space for blankets, yoga straps and blocks.

I am SO pleased with the look of my yoga room after all these years... It's just so calm and peaceful. I'm not sure whether I will eventually sell the buffet if I find another project that's more quality or beautiful but for now I'm uber proud of the results.

Now I should think about practicing some yoga 🙄🧘‍♀️

Wow! That's a great new look of that cabinet. You really made it look new and elegant.

Thanks, I think so!

Very talented with DIY projects! You did an impressive job upcycling and repurposing the buffet to turn it into a classy looking piece of furniture! @riverflows

It looked SOOOO crap before - I'm quite proud of my efforts!

That's a great idea! Awesome work! By the way, do you have yoga instructor?

I've had many over the years, but not at the moment.

This is such a beautiful work that shows amazing talent. I can imagine how tasking it was putting this together but I guess the satisfaction of seeing your handy work put together makes up for it.
This is amazing DIY @riverflows.
Will the yoga room have more decorations?

Thanks so much! No, I'm trying to keep it plain and simple so it has less distraction. It's more peaceful taht way!

you done good, it fits perfectly in the room. Did you need any mansplaining to get it done 😂

Shut up you! In fact, I had to do a bit of mansplaining to my husband so he could see the concept and help me lift it...

LOL!!!!

Great results! I really like your upcycle posts. They almost motivate me to give it a try 😂 I'm a little concerned with the gold feet and pulls. Isn't the point of yoga to avoid being distracted chasing the bright shiny things in the world? lol

Thanks! You should do it. It's good fun and rewarding.

Gold is just a colour like any other colour. No need to covet it or think it's better than another colour. But a peaceful, serene environment is good for the soul. xx

That's exactly what I meant on my previous post (upcycling a secretary desk); you are great at everything.

I love your creativity and each time I see one, I'm always left with broad smiles.

This is really beautiful. I mean I believe it's more beautiful than it was originally. I'm not good at upcycling furnitures but this one is really an inspiration <3

Thanks so much!!!!! I really enjoy doing it and am looking foward to my next one.

It's a awesome doing things you love,on your own and having them come out really beautiful. I'm learning a lot from you and will really make use of these skills at some point in my life. I really believe<3

Now I should think about practicing some yoga 🙄🧘‍♀️

Oh, wow, that is one epic transformation! Love how harmonious it now looks especially with the brass elements! ^^
I love the idea of conscious interior design, where design items harmonize and match the purpose of the space, but are also practical. This is a perfect example of that!

Well done dear👍

Wow. Looks awesome. Those lotus petal inspired door handles are perfect for yoga. And you could always flip this for a tidy profit if you get bored of it!

Yeah I reckon I could sell it for a few hundred maybe, though it's a sellers market right now! Yeah the handles were spot on!
