DIY - Pallet Shelves! I need more space and this is how I made them!

in DIYHub2 years ago

Good day all! Zak here from Cape Town, South Africa!

It is time to do some work in the Garage. So my workshop is starting to look better as I fixed up all the chairs that had no seats and there is more space. Wanting to see even further progress there I decided that the next course of action is to build shelves so I have more place to store stuff in a smaller footprint in my garage and thus free up space.

Well, enough about that. Let's get into it!

So I have been gathering pallets for the wood. I did not even need a reason to gather them. The more I have, the better and the more stuff I can build!

So my good friend @therneau brought me some really cool pallets and I checked them out, realizing I can make some great shelves out of them!

Sticking them against the wall, I theorized that I could just use their existing structure and then cut them at key points and build my shelves.

By taking out THIS plank after the middle base board...

... and the same on the other pallet, I would have two uprights that would then give me space to put two to three shelves into it.

So I brought the pallets inside to work on them.

To be honest. This was brilliant. I could actually build this shelf in a few minutes if I left it just rough and ready... but I wanted to sand it to remove all the splinters and bits.

I can think of few things as annoying as getting splinters after putting something on to the shelf! So this took up most of the time in making the shelves. I sanded with my belt sander I fixed... until the belt broke and then had to set about sanding with my flap disc on the grinder.

You simply cut through the planks where the one plank was removed...

This is then the upright and the park that you cut off, the smaller part, becomes the shelf. So you have two uprights, two shelves and then get two leftover planks to use in other places!

I put all of it together in a dry-fit test and then got out the drill and the screws! Have I mentioned how silly it is that in every Zombie movie they use nails and it always gets knocked down?

And you can physically just bash into a structure built with nails and rip it apart with strength, numbers and few tools. But screws? Just once I would like to see a realistic movie where someone used screws in his barricade instead of nails!

Here is a picture of it sanded and assembled.

I have used plenty of screws...

And a quick strength test by placing a @merenludick on to the shelf! Haha! Well it gets a lot stronger once you fix both shelves to it.

Now... I could just put a shelf in top of this and its done, but I plan on going through this whole story again (with sanding and all) and placing that one on top of this one, fixing them together with the leftover plankas and THEN putting a top on it.

Until then...

Cheers!

Great work! Looks like you have some nice weather there too!

Weather is great here! Its moderate but the hottest is still Jan and Feb. March and April still warm days too. End of April till late August is generally cold.

A nice one. I have a few pallets left and like to build some kind of lounge for the garden.

Hope to find some cool ideas with #DIYhub

I am sure that you could build some nice-looking garden lounge chairs with pallets. I am pretty sure I have seen that somewhere!

...and a !BEER for you

Aha! Thank you very much!

Ah, brilliant! Love the simplicity and it looks great 👍

Thanks man. I will be building more stuff soon and then I will ask you for more pallets! 😁

A nice job man you have finally made these shelves with great care.

Thank you. I am definitely going to make a few more!

Yeah it's great ☺️ and you are always welcome 🤗

It's amazing how many thinks you can make out of disused pallets. nice work, looking forward to seeing it finished.
