Nigerian red wine is what I call this special drink, Nigerians call it zobo. This drink called zobo is popular in Nigeria, it is a refreshing drink made from dried hibiscus flower, it is commonly sold in the streets and considered a staple beverage across the country.

Zobo recipe can be tweaked or twisted by adding any other ingredients, from Pineapple peels to the fruit itself, ginger, garlic cloves etc. there are different things to include.

Ok so in this one I made, I quickly fixed a quick one for the family by using just 3 simple ingredients that my mom got, she asked me to make the drink so that the family could have what to drink available, and something healthier than soda.

Ingredients

  • 3 handful Hibiscus flower
  • 1 beetroot
  • 1 tablespoon pineapple flavor

These ingredients are easily gotten by Hausa traders carrying the varieties of Zobo ingredients in their wheelbarrow, so it's from them that my mom bought these few ingredients.

Preparation

The preparation of this is as easy as anything. It only takes a few steps and we're there.

First I wash the dry Hibiscus in water in a bowl and then put it in a pot

Next peel and wash beetroot and also add it to the pot

I added water that was enough to cover the ingredients in the pot, then set the pot to heat.

We let them boil together for at least 3-5 minutes.

After that we put it down the fire, and sieve it carefully and set it aside to cool.

After it cools off we add the pineapple flavor to it. After adding I confirmed the taste, if it's too sweet we dilute it a bit with water, that was what I did here as I'm not professional about the quantity of flavor to add.

After adding the flavor to it, I poured them inside bottles to store them in the fridge to cool

After pouring them in the bottle I set them aside, and put them in the fridge, while I had a little in my glass to enjoy!
They say na who make food the chop first 😀

It's a joyful thing to make something worthwhile for the family, to have everyone keep asking you, "Where's my own portion, give me mine, oh this is so nice!" hehe, isn't it wonderful!

I certainly loved making this drink and storing it up. And I loved sharing it here.

Thank you all for your time here 🤗

Yes, thank you 🙂

Zobo drink is a regular drink in my home. Though I never thought of adding beetroot which makes it more reddish. I will try it out . Thanks for sharing.

Yes beetroot makes it healthier and more red . Thank you!

I had some tea once that was regular black tea with a little hibiscus added, and it was very tasty! I'd like to try some zobo (by itself) sometime, too! 😋
