It was clear as daylight that Chelsea were not going to go through the new season with only Kepa as the main goalkeeper and that they were going to sign a goalkeeper after such a busy transfer window they’ve had already, signing all the players they need in the areas they needed reinforcement. As always, Chelsea have been linked with a few goalkeeper names over the past few months, most especially the Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana – Nick Pope and a few others have been linked to the Blues as well…
However, reports came out that the Chelsea legend turned technical director Petr Cech have given his own recommendation on the goalkeeper the club should go after – Scouting the Rennes goalkeeper, a club which Chelsea signed Cech from years ago (the rest the say is history). It was after this news broke out that everything became clear that Mendy was the guy as Lampard put his trust on Cech to make the best decision.
Reports came out weeks ago that Chelsea had made a bid to sign the Rennes goalkeeper, but it was said that the initial bid was rejected by Rennes and that Chelsea were going to be making an improved bid… Later today, reports came out that Chelsea’s improved bid was accepted and that the deal was set to be completed in the next couple of days. The player was said to have taken a flight to London and is set to undergo his medical – signing to be completed in the next couple of days according to reports from reliable sources.
This reports have raised a lot of talking points concerning Kepa and what will be his fate once the deal to sign Mendy is completed… For me, I don’t think Kepa should be worried. Yes, the arrival of Mendy will mean his spot isn’t guaranteed anymore, but this could be great for him as it would mean he will be on his toes at all times and will have no option than to raise his game. Yes last season was poor for me, but we all know that he has the abilities to be a great goalkeeper if he keeps working hard and improves himself.
Mendy has the qualities that Kepa lacks, or at least didn’t show last season – height, and most especially comes out to collect crosses which is an area that Kepa failed to fulfil last season. Cech has openly made it clear that the club has faith in him and will give full support to him. With Lampard finally getting a new goalkeeper – its game on and the battle for the number 1 spot at Chelsea begins. Above all, this is great news for the Chelsea fans and will only mean positive for Chelsea as it will force both goalkeepers to raise their game a great deal to give Lampard a headache when making choices for the goalkeeper role.
