The Padma Bridge, built on the river Padma is a dream cherished by the people on both sides of the river for ages. That dream bridge is visible today and according to the government commentary about 80% of the work has been completed. A total of 32 spans has been established out of 43 to complete the bridge. With this in mind, the present government can be said to have succeeded in building the Padma Bridge. It may be true in a big sense but there are many stories behind it. There is no less scandal about the Padma Bridge that is visible today.
Anyway, like common people, I am happy that I will be able to cross the Padma River in a short time and go to South Bengal. It is assumed that people will be able to reach to South Bengal within 3-4 hours where it takes more than 8 hours now.
Now let's come to the main point. An estimated US$3.6 billion will be spent to build the Padma Bridge. This money is being spent on building the main bridge and the road on both sides. It's hard to believe how big the task is without seeing it. Although my birthplace is Dhaka but I have to go there often as my closest relative's house is in Barisal. While I was crossing the river by ferry, saw the ongoing construction work. There is a lot of work on the road connecting the bridges on both sides of the river. This new road takes only 35 to 40 minutes to reach to Mawa from Jatrabari. The government has a long term plan to expand Dhaka the city in this area.
Those who travel to Barisal by river may reach their destination by sleeping whole night in launch. Although the travel time is a little longer, it is not much boring. But those who travel by road to Barisal will be able to tell how long it takes to cross the river by ferry and how much suffering they have to face. It is well experienced by the people those who have travelled there by bus. Sometimes it takes four to five hours to get a ferry after crossing a huge traffic jam.
However, last time when I was crossing the river on my way to Barisal, I was watching the construction work of the Padma Bridge. I am sharing some of his scenes with you here.
As soon as this bridge is built, a strong link will be established between Dhaka and the people of Southern regions. By connecting South Bengal with Dhaka, it will play a big role in the overall development of the country.
Thanks.
Stay safe and healthy.
