"If the sky could dream, it would dream of dragons."
– Ilona Andrews, Fate's Edge
In my time playing Splinterlands, I had many good strategies done in both Wild and Modern Ranked format. While there are varying differences, there's one strategy that stuck to me because it's simple yet effective. This started when Splinterlands introduced the ability, "Weapons Training."
This ability gives your units with no attack the opportunity to inflict damage. Up to this date, I still feel that this ability is overpowered due to many factors but players just wasn't able to utilize them.
I wanted to show the strength of a certain card when put in full force. This would be a little bit expensive than normal but a sure way strategy if you want to climb fast in Modern Ranked. This is the combination of Rage and Nidhoggr.
Niddhoggr
Nidhoggr is a Legendary Dragon summoner from the Rebellion Series. He's one of the airdrops from Conflicts, a feature in Splinterlands where you can get cards by staking cards and packs from Rebellion. Nodhoggr costs 10 mana and has abilities of -1 Armor and -1 Health to enemies. It has Forced Reduction Debilitation reducing your team size by 1. His Rebellion Tactics abilities are both strong as well and can be used depending on your plan for that battle. He can give Blast and Deathblow to 3 of your units giving your team insane AOE damage or give 3 of your units +2 Speed and Execute to quickly eliminate your enemies fast before they can act. |
Rage
Rage, on the other hand, is also a Legendary Dragon unit from Rebellion. He has 5 Magic attack, 4 Speed, 5 Armor and 11 Health. Rage also has insane abilities like Flying, Void, Weapons Training, Life Leech and Affliction.
To compensate with this overloaded kit, Rage costs 16 mana to be used in the battle. When combined with Nidhoggr, that's already 26 mana for a summoner and a single unit which is already equivalent to a whole sized decent team. I don't think I need to point out the awesome combos that this mighty dragon alone possess but...

Battles Introduction
I have some good battles that I added in this article as a highlight on what this combo can do.
This is my most favorite strategy so far for Modern Format as it's very easy to pull as long as you hve the budget for it. The main strategy is composed of Nidhoggr as the main summoner, Rage and any two units with no attacks. I prefer Water Element for Merdaali Guardian and Baakjira but can also be anything like Chaos Agent and Grimbardun Smith for Neutral or Riftwing and Chaos Animator for Death. |

In this first battle highlight, I have Nidhoggr as the summoner and Xenith Monk, Baakjira, Rage, Daigendark Surveyor and Djinn Oshannus as the units.
The Rulesets are...
In this battle, I added Blast and Deathblow abilities from Nidhoggr to Baakjira, Rage and Djinn Oshannus. All of them have Magic attacks making Blast also Magic. Rage is really good with Blast as his 5 magic attack means he can deal 3 Blast attack to other units. The other 3 magic attack units deal 2 Blast attacks increasing my overall power for this battle. |
Battle #2

In this battle, I used Quix the Devious summoner and Rage and Chaos Agent as units.
The Rulesets are...
Since the mana is very low, I wasn't able to use Nidhoggr. I also was in a numbers disadvantage facing 2 units versus 6. Even so, I am confident that I can win since Rage has both Blast from Nidhoggr allowing him to damage 2 units at a time and Life Leech to regain some health every attacks. If my enemy didn't use Silent Sha-vi or any Sneak units, this would be a lot easier since my Chaos Agent, a 1 cmana unit, will be able to use his 2 magic attack (-1 magic attack from Enemy Thaddius Brood) that is granted by Rage's Weapons Training. This is also the reason why I really like Rage. Units with no attacks like Chaos Agent or Riftwing, typically has low mana to compensate their lack of ability to attack. This complements very much with Rage's high mana consumption allowing you to pull off low mana units and give them high damage. This combo from Rage is more disgusting in Wild Ranked Format. In Wild Ranked Format, you can use a Neutral unit called "Furious Chicken" which has no attack and costs 0 mana giving you a 2 in 1 unit combo with Furious Chicken and Rage anytime you play him. |
Battle #3
https://next.splinterlands.com/battle/sl_395bc1980b8806bf5b47624fd71319fa |
In this battle, I used Nidhoggr summoner and Djinn Chwala, Rage, Dhampir Infiltrator, Ravenhood Warden and Silent Sha-Vi as units.
The Rulesets are...
In this battle, I fully utilized the Summoner Tactics and Tactics stage to see what my enemy's plan is before adding the Summoner Tactics abilities given by Nidhoggr. Instead of Blast and Deathblow, I added +2 Speed and Execute to Dhampir Infiltrator, Djinn Chwala and Silent Sha-Vi. The reason for this change is because the only threat I saw in my enemy is Lira the Dark. Adding +2 Speed to Dhampir Infiltrator gives him 6 Speed, same as Lira the Dark. This allows him to hopefull attack first before Lira the Dark eliminating her before she attacks. That would be possible due to Execute which allows Dhampir Infiltrator to launch another extra attack once Lira the Dark goes down to 2 Health. Now, it's just math.
The only downside is that the system probably do a coin toss so Lira the Dark was able to attack first than Dhampir Stalker since they both have 6 Speed. Otherwise, she would've died before even doing any actions. |
Final Thoughts
and ended up at 2000 rating...
This is just an hour after renting at Day 1 and it already jumped me from Bronze 1 to Gold 3. I also have extra 20 more mana since this is just under 30 games.
I rented both Nidhoggr and Rage just to see how much this unit can do. As far as I remember, I only used him before at level 2 and not at max level.
With 20 more games to go for the 50 Energy cap for the day and an extra battle on Day 2, you can imagine at how much more rating I can get once I finished with this very quick grind.
If you want to know more on what rating I can get with these cards, check out my next post. I will give an update on my rating after I'm done with the grind.
