Poetry: A NEW HOPE

I was travelling around without direction
no direction at all, like the midnight wind
when a brand new route opened in motion
and my feet found new ground to defend

I was tired, wretched, and broken down
drowning in the bottomless sea of tears
my expression was scarred with a frown
and my mind poisoned with wry years

I had lived through terrible times there
counting boats flying down the river
hourly, I had nightmares filled with fear
cruel winds casting my body with fever

I had been cursed, beaten, and forgotten
by happiness and everything of the sun
wounds slept in me like words written
aching all through the night for medicine

friends are still there, some are gone
like the softened white in harsh skies
when fruits are flung across the dawn
coming again, in memories that cries

the Niger delta is no country for youth
men nourish their souls only with pain
choking on misty clouds and the earth
swerving over rooftops like gloomy rain

but I walk ahead now, sunset reflecting
into my clean heart, like buildings in Abuja
hope gave me it's hand, dreams becoming
realities, clutching me to envision into afar

now I place my eyes on things I can't see
thrilling my tired soul with happy grief
prayers running in my veins like a sea
at the lonely stairway ends of disbelief

the fires of the dark nights baked me
and through the days of tears I breathe
a creature reborn, of flames and sea
meeting with rage, hills rugged and smooth

I was travelling around without a path
wasted, and thirsty as a dying flower
but today, I've been renewed with a bath
believing in tomorrow's coming hour.
