I know, many of you never tried it once nor heard about this curry even if you are Bangladeshi. This is one of the classic dishes of the Northern part of Bangladesh. During winter, you will get to see people are enjoying potato curry (we call it Alur dal) in different ways; like with green peas, egg omelets, and fishheads. It's tasty, spicy, and goes pretty well with steamed rice.
If you never tried it, here's my recipe!
- I took 250gm of Potatoes
- Two big fish heads (I used Katla fish head)
- Vegetable oil
- Two sliced onion
- Three garlic cloves
- Handful of green chili
- Two tomatoes
- Salt, turmeric powder, and mixed spice powder.
That's it. It doesn't require too many ingredients.
So let's start!
- Wash the roughly cut potatoes and boil them for 15 minutes.
- Fry the onion and garlic slices along with green chilies in vegetable oil for a few minutes.
- Add the fish heads, put salt and turmeric as needed, and cook it for a few minutes. Put a lid on and cook it thoroughly.
- Add the pre-boiled potatoes, one cup of water, and tomato slices.
- Mash the potatoes a little bit and mix them well with all the ingredients. Add some mixed spice powder and coriander (optional).
It wouldn't take long to cook the curry. As the potatoes are pre-boiled so you need to cook them along with the fish heads for a few minutes. If you do this in one step, you can add the potatoes first and cook them for 15 minutes. But in that way, the fish smell doesn't go away. So better make it a two steps process to enjoy the full delicacy.
I added a boiled egg to make it look more appealing. Also, the egg enhances the taste of the curry and goes well with the spicy taste.
I know it doesn't look very appealing but believe me, it will give you a comfortable taste of our traditional curries. Also, as we are accompanied with this curry from our childhood so it always reminds me of home.
If you never tried it, or curry this way in general; I would suggest you try it once. Who knows maybe it will be your new favorite curry!
Have a wonderful day, everyone.
I just finished my dinner. It was rice and fish. Your recipe also looks tasty. I have mostly eaten this recipe in marriage ceremony. But egg was missing there.
This recipe is a marriage ceremony, which must be something interesting. Here we usually include mostly meat and rich foods like Biriyani, not usually fish. Good to know.
Thanks for the recipe.
Looks yummy and am sure it's gonna be delicious 😋
Good to see that you liked it. Most people feel grossed out seeing fishhead as a curry. But it's really delicious.
this is a very good food menu, I really like food like this, Back when I was with my parents, they always cooked eggs like this, and we ate together as a family. thank you for sharing very pretty pictures.
Yes, any traditional curry reminds me of home as you said.
Greetings!
Have a good day.
thank you brother
Umm...maybe you should call it sister. :) :)
Hehe iya 😁
Uh... this looks very good warm food 🤗👌👌👌👌🥃 thank you that you let as see it 👌🤗🥃
It's a very traditional way of cooking. Good to see that you find it likable. I know people don't like to add fish heads to curries or many just throw them away. But we can turn it into something delicious like this.
Thanks for your warm words. :) :)
Have a good day.
Npr... all time we must try something new 🤗👌👌👌🥃
It looks so sumptuous and delightful. Great curry there.
Not many like to add fish heads to curries but it's a gamechanger if you can cook it properly. Thanks for your warm words. :) :)
I wouldn't add fish heads though because naturally I don't like fish because of its smell. If prefer it without fish maybe if another protein could be used.
I got you, may don't like the smell. But adding garlic and cooking it with other spices make it tasty.
Oh garlic is better. Thanks for the e alternative
