Book is a great asset, no doubt. It is what different the learned and informed from the ignorant ones.
Books contain information that goes beyond borders, traditions and customs.
People deposit their knowledge, findings, researches and discoveries in books for others to read and learn from.
While many of us are products of such knowledge, many do not have this opportunity.
We that had the opportunity, it was not from our freewill (we were young to even claim to have such asset anyways) but practically forced on us by our parents.
A child of three to ten years or more does not understand why you wake him up so early in the morning to bath and prepare for school.
They prefer playing and running around the home than to study. Playing brings them pleasure but reading always look so boring.
They always anticipate weekends. They confuse Wednesday for Thursday and Thursday for Friday, wishing the weekend is here again for them to sleep very well and enjoy themselves with their friends.
The major punishment a kid of that age could get is 'go inside, pick your book and read'.
The statement always felt like a knife pierced through our hearts. It brings so much sadness and we felt like we have been betrayed by our parents who clearly saw that we were enjoying ourselves but decided to cut it short by telling us to go and read.
This was what my childhood experience looked like and what i see in the eyes of those little kids who feel reading of books are boring things to do.
Sometimes, our parents do that purposefully. They just want to 'punish' us knowing that reading is done alone and boring as well.
Whenever i look at them and i know they know nothing about the importance of reading but the benefits are there for them.
Do i really blame them? No! I just feel such exercise should be monitored by parents, aunts or uncles who guide them while they read to understand what is in the book and not just staring at it since it is a punishment by their parents.
Have you had similar experiences when your mom decided to remind you about the need to read in the middle of you having nice time with your friends!
How did you feel? Did you see it as punishment or something necessary for you at that moment as a kid.
Kindly share your thoughts in the comment section.
Thanks for your time.
