India is a unique country for its diverse festivals due to its vast cultural and religious landscape. Different regions celebrates unique festivals based on their traditions, often tied to agricultural cycles and mythology, resulting in a vibrant tapestry of celebrations across the nation throughout the year. All this makes India truly "the land of festivals." Yesterday, it was on3 suchbday, when I visited my friends home to celebrate Lohri
Lohri is a harvest festival celebrated in northern India that marks the end of winter and the beginning of longer days. It is a time to celebrate the harvest of crops like sugarcane, wheat, and mustard. The festival is more of a kind of family function. The festival is celebrated over a bonfire. My friends Dad arranged a little bonfire on a bathroom tub. To avoid any mishappening inside home he kept it in the balcony.
Lohri is celebrated on the eve of Makar Sankranti, which usually falls on January 13. The date may vary slightly depending on the solar calendar. People gather around the bonfire and offer peanuts, jaggery, and sisam seeds while praying for happiness and abundance. It used to be a nice family time, where esch of us enjoyed by getting into different topics of discussion. This festival is more of a family affair in cities, while in rural areas, it used to be dance and songs.
The sacred bonfire symbolizes prosperity, fertility, and good fortune. The dinner menu on the ocassion was well made up of traditional north Indian dish. Sarson da saag and makki di roti. Sugarcane products like gurh / jaggerry and gachak (sesame item) provide a sweet contrast to the savory dishes.
It was the lovely time spent together. The warmth of the bonfire and wintry night make every Lohri more beautiful!
Life is all about enjoying every moment
