Theme: SWEETS AND GIFTS

Christmas was pretty low key in my house this year. Usually Hubby and I spent a few days with my sister and her family. With covid on the rise and my hubby’s hip surgery we didn’t travel the 300 mi.(appr. 500 km) distance to her home but a Zoom call came in handy for Christmas well wishes.

I did make sweets, my gingermen cookies with jelly in the belly and a banana bread.

With the dough I also made other Christmas treat cutouts of candy canes, stars and trees.

This may seem like a lot of cookies but they freeze well and taste just like freshly baked when taken from the freezer.

As for the festive banana bread, with red and green cherries, there wasn’t much left by the time I thought to take a photo.

Gift from a friend.🎁 These seem appropriate from someone who knows I like cats and feed lots of birds. 😸

Gift of a bottle of Baileys to spike up Christmas morning coffee in the new cat cup.

And lastly a cashew gift for the birds and squirrel over Christmas.

Wishing everyone much health and happiness. I feel blessed to be welcoming in the year 2022.

The cat cup or mug is a most perfect gift for you. Now you can always have a cat of coffee 🤣

The biscuits look good but the banana bread has whet my curiosity so because it left me wondering how it would taste compared to the banana cakes and muffins that are commonly made here in our country. The red and green cherries are a novelty which I haven't seen here. I've heard of Bailey's but have not tried it yet. And lastly, I sure would like to be one of the birds over there munching on those cashew nuts. They're really yummy but quite pricey here, especially the Planters brand.

Great hunt @redheadpei. Hope you make it in the lucky draw 😊

Thanks @gems.and.cookies for your lovely comment. Yes, the cashews are not cheap. I try to watch for the sales. I figure they are a softer nut for the birds and squirrel to eat. The chipmunks really like them but I haven’t seem them since the winter weather set in.

The banana bread is probably similar to what is made in your country. The only thing is our bananas are imported. They are fairly expensive and when I find the ones I buy are not being eaten and getting old, then I mash them up and make a banana loaf. It’s a batter of mashed bananas, eggs, oil, flour, milk, bit of brown sugar and baking soda. Because of Christmas some red and green cherries added to the batter added a festive touch. Here’s what the loaf looks like when first taken out of oven.

Thanks for good luck wishes. same to you , my friend. 😊

I love cashew! I remember when I was about 8 or 9 years old we had a cashew tree which bore a lot of fruits during its season. My father would have a helper pick the fruits and he'll start a bonfire and started roasting the cashew nuts by throwing them in the fire. After a while he'll pick up the now blackened nuts and start cracking them open. The inside would be whitish and soft and so delicious.

Your banana bread is exactly the same as the ones we have here. In fact my daughter makes them with the same ingredients except for the cherries. Instead she mixes chocolate chips. This is how her banana cake looks like (she took this picture to resemble Pac-Man lol).

And of course, lots of chocolate chips!

Let's cross our fingers we get lucky in the next draw 😊

Your daughter must be a good cook and has a great sense of humor with the Pac-Man cake. 😊 I think we have the same recipe. I always cut the sugar called for in half as I don’t like it too sweet and it turns out fine.

I have put a handful of chocolate chips in the banana bread at times. Even though bananas are not grown here they are a versatile fruit and used a lot. I also mash them in cupcakes, pancakes and also made a banana crème pie. The pie is not something I make often as it can be a hit or miss and has to be eaten the same day. 🙃

Yes, good luck to both of us in the draw. 🤞

Oh yeah, my wife didn't make the gingermen cookies and when I wanted to take some photos for the Season Hunt challenge, they were all eaten, not a single cookie was left. I don't know who has eaten so many cookies, because there were a lot and it wasn't me, honestly ... maybe I ate one or two, maybe a few more ... maybe when I ate the last one from the box that was full before, I thought "oops, none left for photos" 🤣

Your cookies look delicious, Jo, and my daughter has told me one of her friends has baked banana bread, but I have never tasted it before - next Christmas I'll hopefully get the gingermen and maybe also a banana bread 😁

These are nice gifts from your friend, perfect for you, and you didn't forget the quirrels 🐿️
Nice post as always, Jo, good luck in the winner drawing 🤞🤗

Sorry you never got the gingermen cookies but I think you did enjoy some other home-baked ones, Hannes. 😊

I checked your page but didn’t see a post on this season’s hunt and now I know why. 😆 I shouldn’t chuckle as I almost had nothing left of sweets to photograph for the hunt.

Perhaps your daughter will make a loaf of banana bread for you to try.

Thanks for your kind comments and generous gifts, dear Hannes. 🤗 I couldn’t forget the wildlife outside over Christmas. 🐿 🐦

Have a wonderful Thor’s Day. 🔨 ⚡️

I ate them all, now I can admit it. At first I was too lazy and then all cookies were gone 🤣

If I don't forget I will ask her when she visits us next time, but I will definitely not forget the gingermen next Christmas 😁

I'm wishing you also a wonderful Thor's Day, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Seasonal baking in cooler weather, what a pleasure Jo not something I do during our steamy hot days.

Cup ready to go with a sip of Baileys on a cold evening, un-salted cashew nuts sure to please the wildlife, did you buy any salted for you too?

!LUV

Yes it’s a lot easier to bake when weather is cooler, Joan. I do have some salted cashews for myself but only give the wildlife unsalted. When feeding wildlife it’s best to avoid feeding them anything with salt. They may be able to tolerate a little bit but it could also do damage to their system.

Shot of baileys tasted pretty good in the coffee. 🥂 😊

Salted cashews for you and coffee with a wee tot sounds exceptionally good!

Every time I see those jelly belly gingerbread cookies I want one (or more) Jo!! I think I tell you that every time too..lol. Seriously, they look so yummy! The mug is too cute and a little Bailey's in the morning coffee I know is a good combination. You're birds and squirrels are in for a treat with those cashews. Great post and photos Jo, have a beautiful rest of the week! 💞

Thanks Dee. We would have a great chat with some cookies and cuppa Bailey’s spiked coffee. 😊

There are a lot more birds coming to the backyard now the weather is colder. ♥️

Wishing you a pleasant day. 🌞

Most welcome!! Sounds like it would be a wonderful visit! 😊💕

Love your cherry Christmas look in your Banana Bread, it looked a yummy addition.
Hmmm Jo, coffee correcto with a good splash of Bailey's - yum. I like Cointreau in my coffee, it is delicious. I found out about coffee correcto on the Camino Portuguese.
Your Christmas looked like a lot of fun, hope your hubby is recovering well. 💝

Hi Angie. The Bailey’s Irish Crème tastes great with a splash in coffee. 😊 I think similar to the Cointreau.

Hubby is doing well now. It’s amazing what the medical field can do in replacing joints. So many people I know with knee and hip replacements.

Have a wonderful end to the week. 💕

I hope your husband is feeling stronger every day.
There is nothing better than getting Christmas gifts that you can munch following all of the festivities.
My mother would always give us gifts that we could snack on. Her butter cookies were to die for and her apple jelly was the best.
I would always hide the jelly, or in just a matter of a few days, the kids would have eaten it all. 😁

Hi @bigsweed. Hubby is doing good now. It will be 6 weeks next week and he has to go back to hospital then for X-rays to make sure everything alright. I think it is good as finally he is walking straight and not dragging that leg behind him as he was before operation. His incision is at the front of the leg. It is suppose to be the latest method instead of cutting at the side where more muscles are. He can still feel some around the incision.

I hope you are also doing great after your hip replacement and getting stronger everyday. From what I’ve heard it’s important not to do some things, like lift too heavy loads or forget you have an artificial hip. Sit in a good strong chair when tying your shoes so you won’t have to bend 90 degrees. I’ve mentioned this to hubby for I don’t want to see him go through the operation again. He used to be a goalie on a recreation team and that may have added to the hip problem.

True there is nothing like homemade jellies and goodies. Precious memories from our parents never leave us. 😊

I've heard that an incision in the front of the leg is less intrusive and that not as many muscles are compromised. I had my incision at the rear of the leg, but recuperation is still going fine.

Yes, that’s what the surgeon told him about this new method for the incision. Recovery time is suppose to be faster but it all depends on the individual.

Great your recuperation is going well,@thebigsweed. I know a few people who had the same incision as you and they recovered nicely. One man who is a taxi driver said his scar at the rear isn’t noticeable now. I can’t believe how many people have hip and also knee replacements with a new lease on life.

Why I mentioned about not lifting too much is because I know you do a lot of physical work around your property-a lady I know had it done and she worked at a grocery warehouse. She said she felt so good with the pain gone and lifted large bags at her job. . She had to have the hip replacement replaced in 8 years because of this.

I've heard that an incision in the front of the leg is less intrusive and that not as many muscles are compromised. I had my incision at the rear of the leg, but recuperation is still going fine.
