How I Got Into The Memphis Wrestling Territory

in WOOGame6 months ago

My Wrestling Journey Begins

I've been wrestling on independent shows in the New England area and training at Kowalski’s for four years now. I just finished my first tour in Japan. All the advice I was getting was that it was time to work for one of the remaining territories, as I’d gone as far as I could wrestling only a few shows a month. I was at the point in my career where the best way to improve was to work steadily.

So I talked to Walter and asked what he thought. Walter didn't want to lose me, but he knew that would be my best option. He suggested that I talk to Paul about going with me. Paul has about a year less experience than me, but he’s more than ready. So I talked to Paul about going to a territory with me. We could tag team together and split all the expenses. We had each other to lean on and both wanted the best for each other.

Prior Commitments

I was managing a local rock 'n' roll club and was comfortable just giving a two-week notice. Paul (Triple H) was managing a Gold’s Gym. He had some commitments he had to fulfill first. So that put everything on a slight hold.

One of the commitments Paul had was going to a national Gold’s Gym convention. While at the convention, Paul met Ric Flair, who offered him a job at WCW. Of course, he had to take it, which set me back a little. However, it just made me believe my opportunity was coming.

One Door Closes and Another Opens

While I was figuring out my best option, I was still managing the rock club The Rock Pile and working a few shows a month for Walter. The nights Walter had a show, I would work the bar right after the wrestling show. One of these nights, after the bar closed, I put in a tape of that night's match. One of my bouncers was this really tough kid named Jon. He flipped out and told me he always wanted to wrestle. So I took him to Walter’s.

I started to develop a close friendship with Jon. Between four days a week at the school and every weekend at the bar, we were together all the time. Jon finally had his first match, and it was clear he was really green. But you couldn't miss his raw talent.

Walter told me that Raw was in New York and I should go and talk to Jerry Lawler about the Memphis territory. I knew my best option would be to go as a tag team. My friends Paul and Mike suggested I team with Jon. I really trusted their opinion, so I talked to Jon.

We had almost no time to come up with a team name and look. I’ve always been Perry Saturn, and in Jon’s one match, he wrestled as the Eliminator. I felt that our names should go together. So I went to the library—after all, this was before Google. I had to look up things in books. After many hours, I learned Saturn is the Roman god of the harvest. Kronus was the Greek god of the harvest. So we became Saturn & Kronus, the Harvesters of Sorrow. This lasted until we met Lawler.

Off To Memphis

Lawler was doing Raw upstate in New York. I don’t remember what town it was; I just remember it was over a four-hour drive from Boston. We met Lawler at his hotel. I had to convince him to hire us, so I told him Jon was working for a couple of years, even though he had only one match and was working under a year. Lucky for us, Walter had a good reputation, and he hired us. We told him our work names and team name. He said in the South, they would think we were farmers. So we became Saturn & Kronus, the Eliminators. And off to Memphis we went.
