El que juega al azar por necesidad pierde por obligación

Me acuerdo mucho de esa frase y siempre la utilizo cuando veo personas que se matan jugando loterías y el bingo de animalitos. Mi abuelo siempre la decía y siempre la recordaba. Sin embargo, me acuerdo de que cuando yo era chamo, él la decía, pero cuando yo la entendí, me parecía algo contradictorio que él dijera eso, pero me mandaba a mí a comprar ticket de lotería, lo que se conoce por el terminal. O sea, lanzaban el triple, pero él apostaba por los dos últimos números de ese triple, y él siempre compraba el número 92.

Yo veía la necesidad muchas veces alrededor de mí, y seguía sin entender hasta que un día le pregunté: "Abuelo, ¿por qué dices eso si tú estás jugando casi todos los días?" Fue allí cuando nuevamente la sabiduría de mi abuelo me dio otro de esos aprendizajes. Claro, muchas veces también esos mismos aprendizajes yo tenía que descifrarlos porque me los daba también en parábolas. Me dijo: "Es verdad, eso es verdad. El que juega por necesidad pierde por obligación. Yo no juego por necesidad, por ende no pierdo por obligación. Yo juego con el dinero que no me afecta mis pagos necesarios. En pocas palabras, yo juego con lo que estoy dispuesto a perder. Los otros juegan pensando que pueden ganar y allí hay una gran diferencia."

Allí entra la imagen. Como bien saben, las fotos del concurso son mías y de algo que veo y listo hago la toma de la fotografía. En esta ciudad, por donde quiera que paso, veo muchos de esos anuncios de recarga. Todos saben que eso es para recargar los saldos de los teléfonos prepago con cualquiera de las operadoras de telefonía celular que existen en Venezuela, pero también es cierto que en esos pequeños establecimientos colocan una venta paralela de las diferentes loterías que existen o que funcionan en Venezuela. Después de tomar esa foto, como soy supercurioso, entré a preguntar cuántas loterías se juegan y a qué hora.

Mi mayor sorpresa es que las loterías comienzan desde las 8 de la mañana y cada hora a partir de las 8 hay un nuevo sorteo y el último es a las 7 de la noche. En ese rato que solo estuve preguntando, pude ver cómo muchas personas entraban a comprar loterías, lo que se conoce como triple y las loterías de animalitos. Me di cuenta de que compran más las loterías de animalitos porque tienen más probabilidad de ganar, y las apuestas son mínimas. Con tan solo 5 bolívares te puedes ganar 180 bolívares, pero como siempre viene a mí lo que decía mi abuelo: "El que juega por necesidad pierde por obligación." Me cuenta de que existen también dos tipos de loterías de animalitos, los que son de 52 animalitos y los que son de 72 animalitos. Las personas apuestan de a 5 bolívares, pero llegan a gastar hasta 100 bolívares comprando esos animalitos para tener la esperanza de ganar.

Le pregunté a las chicas que trabajan vendiendo esas loterías y justo pregunté por esa persona que había gastado 100 bolívares. La joven me dijo que si él gana, puede ganar 180 bolívares, lo que se traduce en realidad que ganó 80 bolívares porque lo otro fue recuperar los 100 que había jugado. Pero pasa algo: vuelve a jugar y gasta los mismos 180 que ganó y termina perdiendo todo. Y lo peor es que así como esa persona lo hace, hay muchas iguales y siempre todas tienen el mismo aspecto de necesidad.

Todo eso tiene una explicación lógica y no voy a caer en el tema país, pero lamentablemente es así. Hay millones de venezolanos que piensan que jugando juegos de azar saldrán adelante y no se dan cuenta de que lo poco que ganan lo pierden por su propia necesidad.

Mi abuelo tenía razón: el que juega al azar por necesidad, pierde por obligación. La verdadera ganancia no está en el juego, sino en la prudencia y la sabiduría para no dejarse arrastrar por la desesperación.

I remember that phrase a lot, and I always use it when I see people exhausting themselves playing lotteries and the animal bingo. My grandfather always used to say it, and he always remembered it. However, I remember that when I was a kid, he would say it, but when I understood it, it seemed contradictory to me that he would say that but then send me to buy lottery tickets, known as the terminal. That is, they would play the triple, but he would bet on the last two numbers of that triple, and he would always buy the number 92.

I often saw the need around me and still didn't understand until one day I asked him, "Grandpa, why do you say that if you are playing almost every day?" That's when my grandfather's wisdom gave me another of those lessons. Of course, many times I also had to decipher those same lessons because he would give them to me in parables. He said, "It's true, it's true. The one who gambles out of necessity is obligated to lose. I don't gamble out of necessity, so I am not obligated to lose. I gamble with the money that doesn't affect my necessary expenses. In other words, I gamble with what I'm willing to lose. The others gamble thinking they can win, and there lies a great difference."

That's where the image comes in. As you know, the photos for the contest are mine, and I take the shots of something I see and decide to photograph. In this city, wherever I go, I see many of those recharge ads. Everyone knows that those ads are for recharging prepaid phone balances with any of the cell phone operators in Venezuela, but it's also true that these small establishments sell various lotteries parallelly. After taking that photo, out of curiosity, I went in to ask how many lotteries are played and at what times.

My biggest surprise was that the lotteries start at 8 in the morning, and every hour from 8 onwards, there is a new draw, with the last one being at 7 in the evening. In the short time that I was just asking, I could see many people coming in to buy lotteries, what is known as the triple and the animal lotteries. I realized that more people buy the animal lotteries because they have a higher chance of winning, and the bets are minimal. With just 5 bolivars, you can win 180 bolivars, but as always, my grandfather's saying comes to mind: "The one who gambles out of necessity is obligated to lose." I learned that there are two types of animal lotteries, those with 52 animals and those with 72 animals. People bet 5 bolivars but end up spending up to 100 bolivars buying those animals, hoping to win.

I asked the girls who work selling these lotteries and specifically asked about the person who had spent 100 bolivars. The young woman told me that if he wins, he can win 180 bolivars, which translates to him actually gaining 80 bolivars because the other 100 was just recovering what he had spent. But something happens: he plays again and spends the same 180 he won and ends up losing everything. And the worst part is that many others do the same, and they all have the same appearance of necessity.

All of this has a logical explanation, and I won't get into the country's issues, but unfortunately, that's the way it is. There are millions of Venezuelans who think that playing games of chance will help them get ahead, not realizing that what little they win, they lose because of their own need.

My grandfather was right: the one who gambles out of necessity is obligated to lose. The real gain is not in the game, but in the prudence and wisdom not to be driven by desperation.
