A Revolution, just like that. I think that's the best way to describe the sound that Rage Against The Machine has produced since their first debut album, the controversial but powerful "Rage Against The Machine" (1992), which from the very release in November of that year left the critical opinion, the specialised public, but above all, the good music listeners, speechless. When we listen to RATM (I'll use abbreviations to refer to the band, as the name is quite extensive), we can't really distinguish what this group really is. I mean, it's obviously rock, but at first glance, it's not so easy to classify them.

Creo que es la mejor manera de describir el sonido que ha producido Rage Against The Machine, desde su primer álbum debut, el controversial pero poderosos: "Rage Against The Machine" (1992) que desde el mismísimo lanzamiento, en noviembre de ese año dejó a la opinión crítica, al público especializado, pero sobre todo, a los buenos oyentes de la música, boquiabiertos. Y es que, cuando escuchamos a RATM (usaré las abreviaciones, para referirme a la banda, ya que el nombre es bastante extenso) realmente no podemos distinguir qué es realmente esta agrupación. Me refiero a que, obviamente se trata de rock pero a simple vista, no es tan sencillo clasificarlos.
Funk, rap, rhythm and blues, metal, and even pop, are some of the elements that we can appreciate within the repertoire of Tom Morello (guitar, Zach de la Rocha (vocals), Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums), and from that mixture comes the sound so full of power, groove and a lot of essence that definitely distinguishes this band. That's where the idea for this post was born, from the admiration I have for them, even though we clearly don't share the same political ideology... The truth is that we don't really need to agree on that specific issue. To love them and recognise the value they have brought to rock and roll, you only need to spend a few minutes on any platform (Spotify, YouTube, Deezer, you name it...) and you'll see what I mean. I promise you it won't go unnoticed.
On the other hand, there is also a totally innovative characteristic for this style of rock, and it is a feeling that is usually transmitted with violence, but in the case of RATM, it doesn't reach that point; I'm talking about anger. That rage, the fury within the non-conformity and historical injustice, is what gives this band a prominent place in the musical creation. They don't use the stridency and distortion in the guitars (common and completely characteristic of the most extreme metal) but they do use that rich combination of different cultures to make a sound that reaches the people who listen to them and at the same time, the voice of the vocalist (Zack de la Rocha) is a distinctive feature that doesn't go unnoticed.
Funk, rap, rhythm and blues, metal, y hasta pop, son algunos de los elementos que podemos apreciar dentro del repertorio de Tom Morello (guitarra, Zach de la Rocha (voz), Tim Commerford (bajo) y Brad Wilk (batería), y de esa mezcla surge el sonido tan lleno de poder, groove y muchísima esencia que definitivamente distingue a esta banda. De ahí nació la idea para este post, de la admiración que les tengo, aunque claramente no compartamos la ideología política... Lo cierto, es que mucha falta no hace que compaginemos en esa cuestión en específico. Para amarlos y reconocer el valor que han traído al rock and roll, solo falta deleitarse unos minutos en cualquier plataforma (Spotify, YouTube, Deezer, you name it...) y verán a lo que me refiero. Les prometo que no pasará desapercibido.
Por otro lado, también existe una característica totalmente innovadora para este estilo de hacer rock, y es un sentimiento que usualmente se transmite con violencia, pero en el caso de RATM, no llega hasta ese punto; me refiero a la ira. Esa rabia, la furia dentro de la inconformidad y la injusticia histórica, es lo que le da un lugar destacado dentro de la creación musical a esta banda. No emplean la estridencia y la distorsión en las guitarras (comunes y completamente características del metal más extremo) pero si usan esa rica combinación de distintas culturas para hacer un sonido que tenga alcance en las personas que los escuchan y al mismo tiempo, la voz del vocalista (Zack de la Rocha) es un distintivo que no pasa inadvertido.
"Anger is a gift. It's a famous word, originally expressed by Malcolm X, but if you ask me, I would say that Rage Against The Machine, with their vocalist, brought it to stardom in their famous song "Freedom". Now, another tool I love about this band is their use of irony. Most of their lyrics are loaded with messages of protest and with a notorious and unquestionable rebelliousness, which in my opinion is what distinguishes good rock from the rest of the styles, genres and musical creations that may exist. Rock is never going to be docile or submissive, never. The best and most transcendental bands of this genre have proved it a thousand times, and RATM is no exception.

Es una célebre palabra, originalmente expresada por Malcolm X, pero que si me preguntan a mí, diría que Rage Against The Machine, con su vocalista, lo llevó al estrellato en su famosa canción "Freedom". Ahora bien, otra herramienta que amo de esta banda es el uso de la ironía que tienen. La mayoría de sus letras están cargadas con mensajes de protesta y con una notoria e incuestionable rebeldía, que a mí modo de ver es lo que distingue al buen rock del resto de estilos, géneros y creaciones musicales que puedan existir. El rock, jamás va a ser dócil o sumiso, nunca. Las mejores y más trascendentales bandas de este género lo han demostrado una y mil veces, y RATM, no es la excepción.
"Sleep Now In The Fire" is a really well-known song by the band, and for the making of the music video, the renowned filmmaker and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore was involved. The latter is known for pursuing anti-system causes and proclaiming a less voracious capitalism that is more responsible with the environment and human ethics. In this sense, the band took the gamble of filming the video, together with Moore, outside the Wall Street Stock Exchange, with hundreds of protesters cheering their songs, and everything we can see in the video can be said to be based on real events. Obviously, the gamble paid off, but it also earned them an arrest by the New York police...
Once again, proving that the rage was intact, and that it could not be stopped. Obviously, there will always be dissenting voices, who don't like the sound of this band. Let them question them for politically proselytising and defending political and economic ideas, which have proven to be vile and above all failed in the history of mankind, and to a certain extent they would be right (remember, I personally don't share RATM's ideology/philosophy) but I don't lose objectivity and just because I don't agree with them on one point, I throw away what is good about them as far as rock is concerned.
"Sleep Now In The Fire" es una canción realmente conocida de la banda, que para la realización del vídeo musical, contó con la participación del reconocido cineasta y documentalista, Michael Moore. Conocido, este último, por perseguir las causas antisistema, y proclamar por un capitalismo menos voraz y más responsable con el ambiente y con la ética humana. En este sentido, la banda apostó por realizar la filmación del vídeo, junto a Moore, en las afueras de la Bolsa de Valores de Wall Street, junto a cientos de protestantes que vitoreaban sus canciones, y todo lo que podemos apreciar en el vídeo se puede decir que son basado en hechos reales. Obviamente, la apuesta salió bien pero también les valió ser detenidos por la policía de Nueva York...
Una vez más, demostrando que la furia, estaba intacta, y que no se podía detener. Evidentemente, siempre habrá voces disidentes, a las cuales no les complazca el sonido de esta banda. Que los cuestionen, por hacer proselitismo político y defender ideas políticas y económicas, que han demostrado ser viles y sobre todo fracasadas dentro de la historia de la humanidad, y hasta cierto punto tendrían algo de razón (recuerden, personalmente yo no comparto la ideología/filosofía de RATM) pero no por ello, pierdo y objetividad y solo por no estar de acuerdo con ellos en un punto, tire a la basura lo bueno que son en cuanto a rock se trata.
Besides, understanding this also means understanding that they are a pioneering band. We've all heard Limp Bizkit, Cypress Hill, Deftones, or Papa Roach, but remember that in the middle of the Grunge decade in the United States, in the midst of the musical revolution of the 90's, RATM dared to break the mould and express the same anger and non-conformity that the Seattle bands felt, but combined with a simpler message that was more destructive of the established publicity apparatus. No need, the lyrics will say it all. And, indeed, they did. Saturday Night Live, the famous and longest-running comedy and talk show on American television, went so far as to censor and kick them off the set after the band's performance - why, because of the anti-establishment message.
Además, entenderlo pasa también por comprender que son una banda pionera. Todos hemos oído a Limp Bizkit, Cypress Hill, Deftones, o Papa Roach, pero recuerden que en plena década del Grunge en los Estados Unidos, en plena revolución musical de los 90's, RATM se atrevió a romper el molde y a manifestar la misma ira e inconformidad que sentía las bandas de Seattle, pero combinada con un mensaje más simple y destructor del aparato de publicidad establecido ¿Marketing? No hace falta, las letras lo dirán todo. Y, efectivamente, así ha sido. Saturday Night Live, el famoso y más longevo show de comedia y entrevistas de la televisión estadounidense, llegó al punto de censurarlos y echarlos del set, luego de la presentación de la banda ¿Por qué?, por el mensaje contra el sistema.
As you can see, going against a way of seeing the world is quite difficult, especially in a country where people ask about your salary before they ask about your wellbeing. None of this dampened the band's anger and thirst for notoriety and to carry the band's message, on the contrary; Woodstock '99, the last big one, and the most spectacular of them all, had them present and they performed one of the best shows I've ever seen for a rock/rap/metal band in history. The song "Bulls On Parade" is a classic in itself, but to hear it in the din and madness that comes with the Woodstock festival is a must do (seriously, don't hesitate).
Finally, I won't forget the success they achieved by being one of the bands in the unforgettable and great Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, the video game for Playstation (one) that catapulted the band's career, as it included their single "Guerilla Radio". A song that denounces the manoeuvres of the capitalist business apparatus of the United States to sell you everything at the cost of the exploitation of workers (who earn pennies on the dollar, in countries of the so-called "Third World"). Undoubtedly, it is one of the milestones this band has had, and it is also the most known, played and followed song they ever managed to have. As I have been saying, this is how a true revolution in music was born. Pioneers in their genre, rabid to the end and afraid of nothing. This is the most accurate description I can find for the mythical Rage Against The Machine.
Como pueden ver, ir en contra de una manera de ver el mundo, es bastante difícil, y más en el país donde primero se pregunta por tu salario antes de por tu bienestar. Nada de esto amilanó la ira y la sed de buscar notoriedad y llevar el mensaje de la banda, al contrario; en Woodstock 99, la última gran edición, y las más apoteósica de todas, los tuvo presentes y realizaron una de las mejores presentaciones que haya visto para una banda de rock/rap/metal en la historia. La canción "Bulls On Parade" es un clásico en sí misma, pero oírla dentro del estruendo y la locura que conlleva el festival de Woodstock, es ya una pasada que les recomiendo a todos lo que me leen, deben hacer (en serio, no lo dudes).
Por último, no olvidaré el éxito que alcanzaron al ser una de las bandas dentro del inolvidable y grandioso Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, el videojuego para Playstation (one) que catapultó la carrera de la banda, ya que incluía su sencillo "Guerilla Radio". Un tema que denuncia las maniobras que hacen el aparato empresarial capitalista de los Estados Unidos para venderte de todo a costa de la explotación de trabajadores (que ganan centavos de dólar, en países del mal llamado "Tercer Mundo"). Sin lugar a dudas, es uno de los hitos que ha tenido esta banda, y también es la canción más conocida, reproducida y seguida que lograron tener jamás. Como he venido diciendo, así nació una verdadera Revolución en la música. Pioneros en su género, rabiosos hasta el final y sin miedo a nada. Esta es la descripción más acertada que encuentro para los míticos Rage Against The Machine.
