Are inspirations, lessons and games getting back on track?

Inspiration

It is nothing weird if I say that this small corner, the Q-inspired one can offer a lot of inspiration... as the name of it also suggests. I finished reading this post and realized that the composer that @zeraton talked about, Dmitri Shostakovich was indeed underrated. Even I, whose main genre is classical music didn't pay enough attention to that composer. When we were still in the elemental school we had some of his easy pieces in the curriculum but they were not my favourite ones. When we grew up a bit and started to play more serious stuff, we all preferred composers like Chopin and Liszt. Later Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Prokofiev, but Shostakovich, unfortunately, stayed out of the list.

But the day to change that arrived. At least in my book. So, as the inspiration was still very very fresh, I decided to leave aside other things I would maybe for sure have to study and found the music scores of one famous piece composed by Shostakovich.

Lesson

Yes, I am a piano teacher, so it would be nice if I would give now a small lesson about this piece and the composer in question. But I have enough hours to work and teach today, so I will nonchalantly pass the ball again to this post where you can learn about the tragic life of Dmitri but sadness is not predominating there, don't be afraid. Maybe you can also draw your own conclusions and find your inspiration from his life and from the examples that the writer of that article pointed out.

Still, a few words about this Waltz no.2 will come. I am sure the piece sounds familiar as it is considered one of the most known works of Shostakovich. It is a part of a suite, Suite for Variety Orchestra, and comes as the seventh movement of it. Even if you are not a musician, you can hear the waltz tempo and feel the three beats in every measure. The first one is the strong beat, followed by two weak beats. Looking at its bigger form, it is written in the typical ternary form, where the middle section of a Minor key modulates to the relative Major key. (this is where you hear the "happier" sound, not the sad and melancholic one from the beginning and the end). It is just a very simple and basic explanation of how you can recognize the parts.

The measures, as I already mentioned, can be heard as a sequence of three beats. The photo below represents several measures (bars) from the composition. In every measure, we see three beats, right? So, let's move to the next part of this post, which will be the...

Game

The game. Long time no see in my posts. I used to make those guessing games, maybe some of you remember. And if you don't remember or you are new to my blog, then it is the right time to take part in a new one. In the guessing game in this corner.

The answer to my question can be find out in the video, you will just have to listen to it... and count a bit... or just roughly guess if you are lazy to count. {I suggest this second option 😁}

mipiano_banners_strip_gimp.png

How many measures did I play in the video?

mipiano_banners_strip_gimp.png

Don't cheat! I will know if you do that and use for example Google to find out the answer. It would be more than easy... and actually, who would do that? Who would like to cheat and find out the answer like that?

Anyway, the answer you could have from the internet is NOT the right one, as I played here the piece differently. I did something with the parts of the piece... maybe I added some... maybe I skipped some... that is the mystery!

I will send the right answer to the admin of this community, @edje, and when a few days pass, we will check out the possible answers and reward the correct one with a little detail. {don't wait for a fortune}. In case there are several correct answers, the winner is who guessed the first. If there is no correct answer, the closest guess will be accepted as the winning one.

So, enjoy this little waltz and have fun listening and counting the measures ;)

Ah yes, the Waltz No.2 - such a beautiful piece indeed.

You know funny story about this piece: apparently, when Shostakovich was being pressured by the Soviet to write more jazz like music, Shostakovich upon analyzing a jazz manuscript he had just purchased, ended up composing this waltz as a sort of Jazz piece. Hence those sax solos in the original orchestra version.

Clearly, this sounds nothing like jazz though😂! Regardless, the music still bares that strong vibe of Russian to it - beautiful nonetheless.

Oh and about that game of yours... Brilliant! What a fun way to combine music theory and fun time! However, I am way too lazy to count evERY SINGLE bar for 3 MINUTES straight! Hopefully, someone diligent enough gets the job done.

Not sure what piano transcription you played from though, but much like you said, it would be a little difficult for someone to cheat. For example, in another piano transcription I read for the same piece, there was a little coda section with heavy tremolos in the left hand. So, yeah...

Just keep calm and count people!

However, I am way too lazy to count evERY SINGLE bar

lol, I know 😂
And knew maybe no one would do it. That's why I said, my advice is just to guess roughly hahaha

Well, clearly you hear that there are things, or there are maybe missing things, so knowing the real number, and doing some maths you could have a very close guess :D

Hmm, didn't know about the "jazz pressure" but indeed, the saxophone sounds a bit weird or clumsy. I would just listen to it with strings and be happy with it :))

So, the lesson part is reserved for you!

Thanks for the inspiration that made me remember Shostakovich and his waltz for this edition of my guessing games :)

Oh yeah, the jazz pressure thing is quite true. Basically, Shostakovich hated jazz but Stalin loved the genre and threatened him with death if he didn't write more of them, and so on and so forth really...😅

Hmm... Okay then! I'll make an educated guess and say there are well over 120 bars in the entire 3 minute piece. NOW WHERE'S MY PRICE? :)

Also, don't mention it! My pleasure.

Your educated guess will be taken into account {thank you for making it 😇} though we will have to wait a few days to find out the truth... 😁

I see soooooo many people waiting around the corner to count the strong beats of the measures lol 😂

edit: I forgot to quote this earlier

Just keep calm and count people!

Hilarious!
I think everyone will stick to the first part of your sentence 😂

Guessing can bring interesting results. Thanks for participating in this contest, even a little push was needed 😉 Turns out @mipiano played 181 bars. There were four contestants in total and your count with 120 bars finished closest. Congrats! Soon-ish check your wallet 🙃

🥂🥂🥂 thank you for announcing the winner of this GG edition!!

I am joining the congratulations to @zeraton 🥳

I didn't win the lottery with those numbers you gave me that other time :)

But I'll take this reward! Thank you!

Oh, sorry that the numbers didn't work out. Maybe we should keep up with trying to win the lottery with the same numbers, maybe they will be the right ones somewhere in the future :D

Oh snap, I might be about two months late but THANK YOU!!!

For some reason, I didn't see the message or missed the tag somehow.

Oh well...

Beautifully done. Measures, bars, and notes, besides enjoying all different kinds of music, I have no idea about any of these musical terms.

The one thing I do know is that when I listened to this piece I immediately thought of my parents. They were quite a couple and when it came to dancing they were attached at the hip. At weddings, they could be seen floating around the floor in perfect step. If a waltz was being played, you were sure to find them on the dance floor. At times, many of the guests would just stop dancing to watch them glide as one around the floor. I always enjoyed watching and was enamored by their grace.

Let me take a complete guess at how many measures you played, how about 33, my lucky number?

It is actually great you can enjoy music, as it doesn't require knowledge about the terms or else. Just simply letting yourself go with the sound, how great sounds that!!

And I am so glad this piece made you remember your parents and their dancing adventures. Thanks so much for sharing those memories with us! 🙌

So, your guess will be taken into account, I am noting down your lucky number 😇

The correct answer will come in some moment, but still a mystery when ;)

Did you immediately know what a 'bar' was? I didn't so @mipiano had to explain it to me. Anyways, thanks for participating in this contest. Turns out @mipiano played 181 bars. There were four contestants in total and @zeraton count with 120 bars finished closest. The winner's price will be transferred to this user's wallet anytime soon-ish.

I hope that @thebigsweed 's lucky number will still stay the same, but indeed, it was not the lucky one in this guessing game as there were more bars in the piece I played. As you say, 181 👍

the magic of a lucky number is proven to be wrong? 😱

I think not, the explanation arrived, but I think as a reply to my comment 😄

hahahahaha so it seems :)

Did I reply that my lucky number was 33, my bad, it's really 181.

Hahaha, you have a new lucky number 😂

This kind of post of yours are a master class of music and in this case of piano, I loved this post and although you and I know that my knowledge of music theory is limited, if I have some knowledge about your question, so I will venture to give an answer that at first seems far-fetched, but these works specifically waltz have many measures...

First I will tell you that I love when you play, I will not get tired of telling you that, besides this piece is beautiful, just as you say it does not convey something tragic or stormy... I'll be honest I only saw the video 1 time after your question and I think there are almost 300 bars, I do not know, I counted (and I know that at some points I missed) 280 bars approximately, I do not know if I did it the right way, but I will give that figure no matter how bad it looks to other visitors hahaha!!!!

Dear @mipiano it has been such a pleasure to visit your guessing games again, I have been fascinated with your interpretation, I had a long time without telling you this..... You Classically Rockkkkkk!!!! 👍😉🔥🎹🎶❤️🌟🥂💥💫💯

Hello Fernando 😀

Well, maybe not a masterclass, but me having fun 😊 If someone can learn a new thing, then even better. And if others also have fun, that's the perfection already ☀️

So, your answer is 280 or 300 ? Just to be clear ( at least this time we don't measure in metres and centimeters as with the Aloe Vera plant - if you remember 😁 )

Thanks a lot for your guess 🥳🎧🎶

Hehehehe, classically rock!!! Indeed, I didn't give a lot of chances lately that you could use this sentence...

Yes indeed it is fun and great that you have fun with the process of creating and reading comments 😁!!!!

My dear @mipiano that opportunity was very funny hahaha, I remember it of course, well, to be precise I will tell you 280, that will be my response!!!!

And thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you the phrase because you rock and a lot!!!!! 👍😉🔥🎹🎶❤️🌟🥂💥💫💯

I guess @fernanblog knew it :)) but, I managed to mislead even the musicians hahaha 😄

the magic of a pianist 🎶 🙇

The pianist made some bars disappear :D
{well, maybe it was an unplanned error but turned out magic in the end, if you say. I will accept this explanation}
😂

ok, the number is clear.
the revelation of the correct number will be announced in a special way, nobody still knows how 😄
me neither 😁

I see soooooo many people waiting around the corner to count the strong beats of the measures lol 😂

Let them count, and I will peep 😂

Hahaha 😂

But, where's the mischievous little girl that climbed the tree and couldn't come down... to throw a number, any number? 😁

I don’t mind listening to it again, I listened, got lost, started again from the beginning 🤔
In general, I enjoyed the music, it's good that I liked it!
As a professional 🤣 I counted 22 times and don't throw slippers at me! 😆

Hahaha, no, no slippers will be thrown at you 😉

Ok, noted down you guess, thank you 😇
In a few days we will reveal the correct answer 😃

I will be interested!
In any case, I am not at a loss (even if I don’t guess, after all, musical geniuses also tend to make mistakes 🤣 ), since I enjoyed listening to music.

You are not at any loss, indeed, what matters here is music and that we have fun all together 😇🥂

Oh, that's right!

The number of bars in the piece depends on what a bar is. Something I didn't know so @mipiano had to explain it to me. Anyways, thanks for participating in this contest. Turns out @mipiano played 181 bars. There were four contestants in total and @zeraton count with 120 bars finished closest. Ah... now it's clear why I didn't guess right, because @mipiano didn't explain to me 🤣 😂 🤣

😅

hahaha, well, I gave some small hints in the post, but yes, Edje had to know as he was the person set to announce the winner :)))

Anyway, thanks once again for your guess 🥂 🤗
Maybe there will be more of these games again in the future 😇

Yes, I like games, the main thing is that I can count! 🤣

Thats it! {lol}

The number of bars in the piece depends on what a bar is

oh, it can be called also a measure 😅

Initially, I was thinking of a bar of chocolate, dark chocolate. Anyways, do you realise a piano resembles Penoti 😆

Wait...what? Piano resembles hazelnut paste? Does it also mean I should consume it every time before I play it? Is it a recipe to become a successful pianist?

untitled.gif

My teachers kept that secret just for themselves!!

Now you're teaching us 😊 I would love to learn from you . your fingers really move gracefully.. We have a piano at home (my boss' home).. But seemed useless haha .. The lady at home just using it if she likes to.

What a beautiful piano 😍🤩🤩
Yamaha, as I see, and full shine ☀️

Huh, if I only could teleport myself there, but be invisible... then I would play it and everyone in the house would think there are ghosts around 😂😂😂
Just you would know that it's me hahaha

Haha. I hope you could do it then you'll teach me how to 🤣. Sometimes when I am alone at home, I would play it randomly haha. But hey I know how to play one piece, the twinkle twinkle little stars 🤣🤣..

Oh, that's cool that you do it. Clandestine piano player ;)

Twinkle twinkle little star is a good start :D

untitled.gif

:))))

Why did I write twinkling? 🤣 blame the auto spelling options..lol.

It can happen 😁

Well, I strongly think that there's no truly inspiration without interaction. I mean, we often see and inspired from those who surround us. Music, art poetry, even technology, are behind our own thoughts and action. For instance, why I am here, on Q-inspired community? Simple, I read several posts of yours, and I'm in since. Great post, my dear friend @mipiano

We are indeed inspired by those who we interact with, and if we can create a new idea or work from the initial trigger... or just develop it and add our touch, it is already a beautiful thing.
Also, I am really glad you like our small Q corner 😇
Thank you for coming by and wishing you a great weekend 👋

@tipu curate 2

Thank you @rozku 😇 🎶

Looking at that, i dint know what to say . One word from me is speechless 🤲❤️

Hi there @didipaul

One word... maybe one number could come too?

I appreciate your time you took to listen to this waltz 🎶🎶🎶😃

Now I understand why your user name is Mipiano😁. Finally got a chance go listen while you play..I don't know how to play any musical instruments so honestly find it hard how to count the beat🤣.
Thus, I felt calm listening at it and I can imagine myself swaying😁

Yes, Mipiano as it has something to do with the piano 🎹 😃

I am glad you felt calm and imagined yourself swaying. It's actually a type of a dance, the three beats in the measure bring that danceable feeling. (though this musical piece is maybe not the best representation of music for dance)
Thanks for stopping by @lhes 🎶🎶🎶🕺

I threw in the towel with your riddles a long time ago, I'm not good at any kind of riddles, I think a couple of times I tried to guess and I didn't succeed, I'm not good at counting measures either, but what I have not given up is to enjoy this great piano music 😌 your influences of those great classical composers are perceived, and of course, you are a master of the instrument.

A pleasure to listen to you dear friend. 🙌🙏😃🎵💯⭐

You know, there are no negative points for not making a good guess :D any guess is a guess!

Thanks for your words and listening to me, I don't record and publish lately a lot of my playing, so it feels strange and surprising any one would still listen to it 😅🎶

I am not a musician or anything like that but I think that the sound of the piano is so magical that I would really like to learn how to play it, it fascinates me so much that out of curiosity I download piano applications on my phone to learn a little bit of what it is and to know the notes and that but I love that beautiful thing that transmits the piano, thanks for sharing this and for always coming to support me, take care of yourself.

Piano IS a beautiful instrument, I do agree with you. And not just because it is my chosen musical instrument but it does have a special sound.
It's cool you have apps downloaded, learning the basic thing and notes, but for real knowledge, a piano or a keyboard would be needed :)

Thank you so much for sharing my post on Twitter 😌

Wow. My sister can relate. She plays the piano too.

That's nice she plays it ☺️ 🎶🎶🎶
Isn't piano the best musical instrument? Heheh, just kidding, every instrument is nice on its way 😉

Ah huh. I envy her. She got the skills.
