SONGS DO GO INTO EXTINCTION JUST LIKE ANIMALS AND PLANTS

LAS CANCIONES SE EXTINDEN COMO LOS ANIMALES

Certain animals have gone into extinction because they do not reproduce very often and also because people failed to domesticate them by preserving them in zoos. Rather, they hunted and killed them for food. 😢 This can also be said of some plants because of deforestation in many parts of the World. In the same vein, certain traditional songs have gone into extinction just because people who knew such songs failed to pass it on by teaching younger ones.

Often times, in schools and other social gatherings where people are usually called to make song renditions, people look out for trending new songs and they shy away from singing old songs that have beautiful lyrics and good messages. With this mind set and orientation, a lot of beautiful traditional songs are no longer known by the present generation. I am really thankful to my grand dad and in extention to my dad who never stopped teaching me old traditional songs especially traditional Latin Church songs. On several occasions my friends and class mates have expressed a kind of shock hearing me sing traditional songs that they have not even heard of not to talk of singing. As such, some of them jokularly call me traditionalist 😂

The point am emphasizing here hints on the fact that most people in this our generation are more interested in trending new songs thereby neglecting old and traditional songs with so much positive meanings and moral lessons. Such beautiful songs can be found across different religions and cultures such as; Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc. Be that as it may, people however place more values on tending new songs whose lyrics do not even have any reasonable moral significance.

With my orientation and understanding of the fact that a lot of beautiful songs have gone into extinction, I decided to spend a chunk of my eight weeks' activities in Kogi state (Ida diocese) in teaching traditional Latin songs to children and some few adults who had the time. To my greatest surprise, some of the adults have never heard such songs not to talk of the children. In other words, such songs were already extincting in their locality. Even though some of the songs are difficult to learn because of their mode of composition, the children were able to learn after I made them repeat each phrase severally. The children were so excited repeating such exciting Latin words and musical phrases. The latin words sounded so funny to them and they were glad making jokes and creating fun with them especially with their mode of composition. It was indeed energy sapping and time consuming but my joy lies in seeing children sing such old and interesting beautiful chants with their innocent beautiful voices.

Some of the Gregorian chants I took into considerations include;

  1. Kyrie
  2. Gloria
  3. Credo
  4. Pater Noster
  5. Santus
  6. Agnus Dei

In this entry, I have decided to share one of the chants I did with the children (the 'kyrie' Gregorian chant) I so much enjoy listening to their innocent beautiful voices and I'm really greatful and so fulfilled being able to pass this across to them. You will find me in the video accompaning them with the keyboard. I hope it makes meaning to you as you watch.

This is so lovely. Indeed this generation has become so attracted to trending songs that has no meaning forgetting the songs of old that made so much sense.

I enjoyed every bit of the video, the kids were so amazing with the way they sang the hymn. Love every bit of it. Thanks for sharing @onos-f
