Like you, I struggle a lot with both patents and copyrights, and although there are many pros and cons to lay out in a comment I will try to not write an EDJE.
As you know and old Dutch song says: "We zijn hier om elkaar te helpen niet waar?
Then why should something that can improve many lives be limited to few? Patents make sense as they protect money invested in developing a certain tool or product, the benefit should be equal hence patents should be limited to the time required to say double that investment and then be released to allow the broader audience the benefits and future developments by using those patents freely.
An artist has the ability to perform and if done well that could generate income, one should be rewarded for it´s products and investment of time. Similar to patents the creation of a quality piece of art should be rewarding also in a financial way.
But it should not be protected and guarded n order to squeeze every penny out of every fart Madonna ever created.
AI is seemingly unstoppable, so it´s time to adjust and if that means that patents and copyright can no longer be protected it will have a certain impact.
Innovation might be less interesting to invest in by big corporations, which might drive people to start investing for better reasons than making money.
And Artists who only create art to pay the bills are called painters.....
Well I guess I ended up with an EDJE anyway but at least it started my brain this lazy Sunday morning.
That's a serious EDJE 😆
I wonder, Is the whole concept of patents and copyrights wrong, even in the first period? Darn difficult to make a system with certain criteria and all that, worldwide. I understand why they can benefit, but what if we ditch it all? Will this prevent people from inventing new things? In open source side of things new things are created, without any protection, by people with no financial gains. Funding for expensive productisation, like medicine, could be done through crowdsourcing. Like the BIO token tries to do? Ok BIO is still patent-based.
Added to the thought of ditching everything altogether, big changes we need to transform our economies across the world, to incorporate AI Agents, progressing into a future AI Agents executing the majority of tasks, and perhaps even research and concept creation, I think we shall not be limited by any patents.
For copyright, you hit the nail. Artists can pick up gigging again. And perhaps when we don't have copyright we may hear a larger variety of music on TV and Radio again. Since no reason for labels and publishers to push for a specific artist anymore. At least not from royalty point of view.
It'll be painful at start when ditching both, patents and copyright. But eventually, this can be one of the greatest things we changed.
note: Ricardo Semler became a billionaire by running businesses as a village without a major to decide on everything, but as a collective. He is advocating the removal of patent rights for decades.
