The young lady with a red sleeveless body con dress and thick thighs drew the attention of almost everyone in the mall; both males and females alike. Because of this, the supervisor of the store I was shopping in passed a side comment that got everyone arguing… “It is dresses like that that urge men to rape women.”
For a second, nobody in the store said a word and the very next moment, all hell broke loose. Surprisingly, it was the men in the store who were hitting on the fact that one’s dressing has nothing to do with ‘the predicament’ . At the end of the day, we came to a conclusion that although ‘indecent dressing’ may be a trigger, rapists are sheer animals in human clothing.
This brings me to the question of the day; “Does indecent dressing necessarily lead to rape?”
In the past, rape and indecent dressing went hand in hand but slowly, the world evolved and so did people's mindset. In the past many people went as far as passing nasty comments like “they deserved it” when anyone fell victim to circumstance. How about the little kids? Or the individuals that were byforced by people of the same gender? Did they deserve it too?
Just last year, news of a young and promising male college student who was raped to death by fellow male student went viral and females in the comment section couldn’t be more happy. Although this was sad news and was supposed to be treated as such, people just took it as an opportunity to share their thoughts as it was a pointer to the fact that your dressing or degree of decency doesn't necessarily determine whether or not you become a victim of rape.
To reiterate, I would not totally cross off indecent dressing when talking about rape but two things would always stand out and they are; lack of self control and lust. In a narcissistic world, people may want to blame it on mental instability but research has shown that defilers are usually in their right senses whenever they carry out their heinous acts. As such, they lack simple self control.
While lack of self control has a lot to do with one's mind, lust has more to do with physical attraction and impulses. This is the case where an individual may be attracted to anything be it one’s physical appearance, method of communication or even intellect in the case of sapiosexuals. With this, they may be prompted to act on their attraction, leading to heinous acts.
In a world where fashion styles and personal preferences vary, I believe people should stop allocating blame to things that do not deserve blame and actually work on tackling the issues from the root.
I was reminded of a song I initially came across courtesy of the trailer of the series “the crown” while scribbling down my thoughts on the incident at the mall.

The masterpiece “The Times They Are A-Changin” by Bob Dylan deals mainly with ‘change’ as a theme. The song talks about how swiftly the world is changing and how humans are adapting on the flip side. It is indeed a really good listen.
On that note, I would love to hear your views on this topic. Is indecency the main cause of rape?

I felt bad about the young man that was raped to death and pissed off when I realised people especially women were using it as an opportunity to score cheap points.
It's just the reality of things. Many people, especially Nigerians, trivialize serious issues most of the time.
