It WAS striking ... I have another striking case of that to report in future weeks from Mozart ... from what I can find out about the poet, he might have come to that path through Eastern religion, which also has its monasteries and solo life, because he translated so much Asian literature ... but because of course I heard the poem with a Christian's ear, the resonance stuck out to me. But also notice where I DIVERGED ... the poet finds Heaven in his own goodness, his own work, his own song, and there I could not follow him, because self-worship is STRICTLY forbidden to the Christian.
Perhaps that was intended to prevent it from being labeled in the religious genre? By preventing that, there's a much better chance that it will succeed?

This is a good question, but probably not a concern in Germany of the 19th century ... I have a book that gets lower marks for being unapologetically Christian, though, so, that is a thing in the United States of the 21st century...
Yeah, depending on the country, and its culture at the time the art is created, it might be an issue. But somehow I don't think the masters cared about that :)
