Patty, an American nursery school & kindergarten teacher, played a significant role in the drive for progressive education in the 19th century. She also contributed to the establishment of the Institute of Child Welfare Research at the Teachers College of Columbia University in 1924. The National Association for Nursery Education (NANE), currently known as the National Association for the Education of Young Children, was also founded with her assistance (NAEYC).
