Looks like a fungal ring. Not something to worry too much about, but you might periodically have mushrooms spring up along the perimeter of the circle.
I think you're 100% right. It's been rainy of late and this area gets mushroom activity. Digging and learning, it seems to be a "fairy ring" from mycelium growth in roots.
I don't know about mycorrhizae, had to look it up. But u think you're right. Fungal activity was the first thing I thought of. Plus, it has been rainy here. Thanks for teaching me something.

Probably the work of something underground... I would guess mycorrhizae, but also possibly insect activity.
