The cynic in me suspects the Critical Race Theorists need to divorce their political movement from the values of the civil rights movement, namely a shift away from the individual to the collective identity.

No doubt. The CRT, at least in it's political manifestation, forms identity differently to more classic Marxism. Namely, class isn't an immutable characteristic. Race, gender are.
