I don't know how he came to write the story like this. The feeling of young love, the unspoken admiration, the obsession, and self-harm, the playfulness, innocent interactions with deep meaning, and their tragic death presented as fate. I fail to compare it to anything else.
I like to think that this level of storytelling anyone can reach with training, but it's amazing.
I think Oda is a better storyteller, just by the fact he writes as many emotions in ONE PIECE while taking fewer breaks than Togashi, but who we are to compare geniuses?

It's kind of a wild swing to jump over to One Piece. I was always wondering if Oda had Haki in mind from the beginning. My bet would be no.
I think he had a vague idea about the kind of power that would become Haki from the beginning, but he only finalized it after finishing "Thriller Bark" or something.
If Haki was finalized by Enes Lobby, the fight between Ace and Blackbeard wouldn't be weird by today's standards.

He's throwing the Haki around a bit too cheap for my taste. It reminds me of the Super Sayen 2 by Trunks that we saw vs Cell, soon to be deemed as too slow and energy expansive. And as soon as B00 came around everyone just went straight to ssj3 only for Gohan to show them the way later on without any Super Sajan techniques.
Right now everyone accomplished high levels of Haki and Luffy unlocked his Devil Fruits real form. We're really close to the end. Hopefully, Oda has a good vision of what a good ending might even be able to look like. One Piece is very otherworldly, it will be hard to create a relatable closing act and present it in a One Piece style. My best guess is that the final form of the Devil's Fruits turns out to be life-consuming, his adventure might end with him dead on arrival.
I think there's only 1 big fight left for Luffy in this story, which will make the only power-up is to "How to use this form correctly."
I'm handling this better than Dragon Ball is that we know the power ceiling is Roger & Whitebeard, so it's Luffy-level is still grounded.

Hmm, I don't think anyone can battle Luffy and the Straw Hats at this point. He's the Joy Boy reincarnated and they've beaten Kaido and Big Mama.
Except Blackbeard and/or maybe Akainu, but I believe it's just Blackbeard by now.

As for Gohan vs Buu near the end of DBZ, it wasn't his base form, it was a special form "Mystic Gohan" that (I believe) prevents him for accessing Super Sayian, but is more powerful than Super Saiyan.
Not sure I remember the details, but you're correct that DBZ is ridiculous!

Mystic Gohan, thought that was just a title-type thing. It was an actual form, ups Ta ta.
WOa, that Dub is hard to take :D
That's actually an internet Parody of the series called "TeamFourStar: DBZ Abridged."
It's very funny.
