"Make a Wish for Christmas!"

Today I'd like to show you an acrylic painting I made in a rush, in a few short hours - and there is a sad reason for this. I had originally planned to paint a fancy Christmas motif as this year's Christmas gift for my sister Yvonne. The Christmas season is Yvonne's favorite time of the year, so a painting seemed to be a wonderfully personal present.
For the last two years Yvonne had been battling cancer, mostly with ever increasing weekly doses of heavy chemotherapy. Last week, Yvonne called me, to let me know that she would have to be hospitalized again since she was feeling very weak. Just a day later, my nephew Danny urged me to visit Yvonne in the hospital a.s.a.p., as "things were not looking too good."
Heute möchte ich euch ein Acrylbild zeigen, das ich in aller Eile, in wenigen Stunden, gemalt habe - und das hat einen traurigen Grund. Ursprünglich hatte ich geplant, ein ziemlich ausgefallenes Weihnachtsmotiv als diesjähriges Weihnachtsgeschenk für meine Schwester Yvonne zu malen. Die Weihnachtszeit ist Yvonnes liebste Jahreszeit, weshalb mir ein Gemälde ein wunderbar persönliches Geschenk zu sein schien.
In den letzten zwei Jahren kämpfte Yvonne gegen den Krebs, hauptsächlich mit immer höheren wöchentlichen Dosen starker Chemotherapie. Letzte Woche rief mich Yvonne an, um mir mitzuteilen, dass sie erneut ins Krankenhaus müsse, da sie sich sehr schwach fühle. Nur einen Tag später drängte mich mein Neffe Danny, Yvonne so schnell wie möglich im Krankenhaus zu besuchen, da "es nicht gut aussähe".
I so wanted Yvonne to have her Christmas painting! So I figured, I paint one that very day and take it to the hospital to cheer her up a little.
I got a visitation time slot (COVID rules) but my original gift idea was way too complicated to be done up that quickly. Instead I borrowed a considerably simpler concept by my Canadian artist friend Joni Young, a gifted painter who is also famous for fast and easy acrylic paintings. So I got it painted, I got it dry, and made it to the hospital at my allotted time slot.
By the time I was allowed to see my sister she was already heavily medicated and unconscious. All I could do is sit by her side and hold her hand. Yvonne passed away peacefully that night. She never got to see her painting.
Ich wollte unbedingt, dass Yvonne ihr Weihnachtsbild bekommt! Also dachte ich mir, ich male noch am selben Tag eines und bringe es mit ins Krankenhaus, um sie ein bisschen aufzumuntern.
Ich bekam eine Besuchszeit (Corona-Regeln), aber meine ursprüngliche Geschenkidee war viel zu kompliziert, um so schnell fertig zu werden. Stattdessen entlieh ich mir ein deutlich einfacheres Konzept bei meiner kanadischen Künstlerfreundin Joni Young, einer begnadeten Malerin, die auch für ihre schnellen und einfachen Acrylbilder bekannt ist. Ich malte es, ließ es trocknen und schaffte es zu der mir zugewiesenen Zeit ins Krankenhaus.
Als ich zu meiner Schwester durfte, stand sie bereits unter starken Medikamenten und war bewusstlos. Ich konnte nur noch an ihrer Seite sitzen und ihre Hand halten. Yvonne verstarb friedlich in dieser Nacht. Sie hat ihr Bild nie mehr zu Gesicht bekommen.

A tender painting, I am sorry for what is happening to Yvonne, I hope this pitura cheers up her heart and soul and she can win the battle against cancer.
Thank you. You must have misunderstood: Yvonne died that night. But yes, the painting would have cheered her up. She just never saw it.
