Today I talk to you about what I was lucky enough to taste during my holiday in Malta. In the first appointment we talked about desalinated water, Cisk beer and the fizzy drink Kinnie.
We landed in Malta a little late and were very hungry. So, the first meal in Malta was not typical cuisine at all! We headed to the fast-food closest to the airport, Burger King.
It is a restaurant that mainly prepares sandwiches, salty snacks and chips and is widespread throughout the world. The only peculiarity of this Burger King was the fact that it served, among the drinks, an excellent Kinnie with ice and lemon (Malta's national drink). For the rest, it is a restaurant where we were able to buy the same food that I buy in Italy.

Oggi continuo a parlarvi di cosa ho avuto la fortuna di assaggiare durante la vacanza a Malta. Nel primo appuntamento abbiamo parlato dell’acqua desalinizzata, della birra Cisk e della bevanda gassata Kinnie.
Siamo atterrati a Malta con un po’ di ritardo e avevamo molta fame. Quindi, il primo pasto a Malta non è stato per nulla di cucina tipica! Ci siamo diretti al fast-food più vicino all’aeroporto, il Burger King.
È un ristorante che prepara principalmente panini, snack salati e patatine ed è diffusa in tutto il mondo. La particolarità di questo Burger King era solo il fatto di servire, tra le bibite, un’ottima Kinnie con ghiaccio e limone (bevanda nazionale di Malta). Per il resto, si tratta di un ristorante dove abbiamo potuto acquistare lo stesso cibo che acquisto in Italia.
However, once we arrived at our accommodation, we immediately remedied the scandal by tasting a typical product of Malta: pastizzi!
It is a traditional treat made with pasta filled with ricotta cheese (called “pastizzi tal-irkotta“) or peas (called “pastizzi tal-piżelli“).
These sweets are typically cooked in mini-vans or in small kiosks that can be found in the main squares. These places are called “pastizzerija” and are almost always family-run. However, pastizzi are also sold in bars and cafes as they are often eaten for breakfast.
Arrivati al nostro alloggio, però, abbiamo subito rimediato allo scandalo assaggiando un prodotto tipico di Malta: i pastizzi!
Si tratta di una delizia tradizionale realizzata con pasta ripiena di ricotta (chiamati “pastizzi tal-irkotta“) oppure di piselli (chiamati “pastizzi tal-piżelli”).
Questi dolcetti sono tipicamente cotti in mini-van oppure in chioschi di piccole dimensioni che si trovano nelle principali piazze. Questi luoghi sono chiamati “pastizzerija” e sono quasi sempre a conduzione familiare. I pastizzi, però, sono anche venduti nei bar e nei caffè in quanto sono spesso consumati a colazione.
My boyfriend and I love ethnic food. Malta is a multicultural island where you can hear many different languages spoken. For this reason, we decided to try two ethnic cuisines:
- My absolute favorite cuisine is Indian food. I love the spices and combinations of flavors that Indian chefs can create! We tried Indian bread, lentil curry, chickpea curry, spinach with cheese and rice with cumin. Everything was simply delicious!
- A couple of days later we also tried Japanese food. In particular, the chefs were Japanese but they also offered fusion dishes inherited from Chinese and Thai traditions. We tasted the wonderful sushi with avocado and cucumber, tofu, wakame seaweed, rice with vegetables, ramen, ... While my boyfriend was very impressed by the grilled salmon, of which he ate an excessive amount.
Io e il mio fidanzato amiamo la cucina etnica. Malta è un’isola multiculturale dove si sentono parlare moltissime lingue diverse. Per questo motivo, abbiamo deciso di assaggiare due cucine etniche:
- La mia cucina preferita in assoluto è la cucina indiana. Adoro le spezie e la combinazione di sapori che i cuochi indiani sono in grado di creare! Abbiamo assaggiato il pane indiano, il curry di lenticchie, il curry di ceci, gli spinaci col formaggio e il riso con il cumino. Tutto semplicemente delizioso!
- Un paio di giorni dopo abbiamo provato anche la cucina giapponese. In particolare, i cuochi erano giapponesi ma proponevano anche dei piatti fusion ereditati dalla tradizione cinese e thailandese. Abbiamo assaggiato il meraviglioso sushi con avocado e cetriolo, il tofu, le alghe wakame, il riso alle verdure, il ramen, … Mentre il mio fidanzato è rimasto molto colpito dal salmone alla piastra, di cui ha mangiato una quantità spropositata.

C'è qualche influenza siciliana però non molto diffusamente! Hanno dei cibi locali interessanti e poi tantissimo etnico, si sentono parlare diverse lingue anche solo per strada. Davvero affascinante 😊 grazie per il supporto ❤️
