Today I want to tell you about an incredible experience I had almost a year ago: my first Nascar race! I had never been to an event like this, and I have to say it was something absolutely unforgettable. Are you ready to find out how it went?
Almost a year ago, on May 19, 2024, I had an unforgettable experience. It was a quiet day, with no particular commitments, when Roy, a friend of my boyfriend's and a big fan of cars and Nascar, invited us to a free event at the Vallelunga racetrack, not far from Rome. The event was co-organized with the Lazio Region and, without thinking too much about it, we decided to accept the invitation and leave with him and his father.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but as soon as we arrived we were greeted with a free badge that allowed us to enter directly into the paddock.
It was incredible: we had free access to almost all areas of the racetrack, except of course the circuit for safety reasons. security.
The atmosphere was charged with energy and there were cars of every type and kind everywhere. Some were absolutely out of the ordinary, while others, as Roy explained to me enthusiastically, were specially designed to perform spectacular stunts in track.
We watched two races: one Nascar and another with more traditional race cars. The show was breathtaking! It was impossible to take your eyes off the track, as the cars whizzed by at impressive speeds.
I tried to capture those moments with my camera, trying to get the classic effect where the car seems stationary and everything else is in motion. After many shots and attempts, I managed to capture something, but mostly I found myself with sequences of images that told the speed and adrenaline of the moment.
I have to admit that before that day, I knew little or nothing about Nascar. Luckily Roy was there to explain everything to me! In practice, Nascar (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) is a racing championship born in the United States in 1948, and is based on cars that apparently look like normal cars, but are actually modified to be real racing beasts. The races are almost always held on oval circuits and can last hundreds of miles, so you have to manage fuel, tires and pit stops well. Roy also told me that in these races contacts between cars are frequent, which makes everything more spectacular and unpredictable. And, surprise! In recent years, Nascar has also arrived in Europe with a dedicated championship, the Nascar Whelen Euro Series, and that's exactly why there was a race in Vallelunga. In short, it was like entering a completely new world for me!
The paddock was a world of its own, a true celebration of speed. Among cars, mechanics at work, drivers focused and curious like us, there was also a group of cheerleaders ready to perform. There was also a stage being prepared, probably for a concert that would be held later.

My only regret? Not having brought my dad's super telephoto lens! I would have loved to be among the photographers on the trackside, with those huge zooms capable of capturing every detail of the action.

That day at Vallelunga opened my eyes to a world I had only briefly known. The adrenaline, the deafening sound of the engines, the enthusiasm of the crowd: everything contributed to making this experience unique. I doubt I'll ever become a true NASCAR fan, but one thing is for sure: I'll never forget that first race!

Oggi voglio raccontarvi un'esperienza incredibile che ho vissuto quasi un anno fa: la mia prima gara Nascar! Non ero mai stata a un evento del genere, e devo dire che è stato qualcosa di assolutamente indimenticabile. Siete pronti a scoprire com'è andata?
Quasi un anno fa, il 19 maggio 2024, ho vissuto un'esperienza indimenticabile. Era una giornata tranquilla, senza impegni particolari, quando Roy, un amico del mio ragazzo e grande appassionato di auto e Nascar, ci ha invitati a un evento gratuito presso l’autodromo di Vallelunga, non lontano da Roma. L’evento era co-organizzato con la Regione Lazio e, senza pensarci troppo, abbiamo deciso di accettare l'invito e partire con lui e suo padre.
Non sapevo bene cosa aspettarmi, ma appena arrivati siamo stati accolti con un badge gratuito che ci permetteva di entrare direttamente nel paddock.
Era incredibile: avevamo libero accesso a quasi tutte le aree dell’autodromo, eccetto ovviamente il circuito per motivi di sicurezza.
L’atmosfera era carica di energia e ovunque c’erano auto di ogni tipo e genere. Alcune erano assolutamente fuori dal comune, mentre altre, come mi spiegava Roy con entusiasmo, erano progettate apposta per fare acrobazie spettacolari in pista.
Abbiamo assistito a due gare: una Nascar e un'altra con auto da corsa più tradizionali. Lo spettacolo era mozzafiato! Era impossibile distogliere lo sguardo dal circuito, mentre i bolidi sfrecciavano a velocità impressionanti.
Mi sono cimentata nel cercare di immortalare quei momenti con la mia macchina fotografica, tentando di ottenere il classico effetto in cui l’auto sembra ferma e tutto il resto è in movimento. Dopo numerosi scatti e tentativi, qualcosa sono riuscita a catturare, ma per lo più mi sono ritrovata con sequenze di immagini che raccontavano la velocità e l’adrenalina del momento.
Devo ammettere che, prima di quel giorno, di Nascar sapevo poco o nulla. Per fortuna c’era Roy a spiegarmi tutto! In pratica, la Nascar (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) è un campionato di corse nato negli Stati Uniti nel 1948, e si basa su macchine che all’apparenza sembrano auto normali, ma in realtà sono modificate per essere delle vere e proprie bestie da corsa. Le gare si svolgono quasi sempre su circuiti ovali e possono durare centinaia di miglia, quindi bisogna gestire bene carburante, gomme e pit stop. Roy mi ha anche raccontato che in queste gare i contatti tra auto sono frequenti, il che rende tutto più spettacolare e imprevedibile. E, sorpresa! Negli ultimi anni la Nascar è arrivata pure in Europa con un campionato dedicato, la Nascar Whelen Euro Series, ed è proprio per questo che c'era una gara a Vallelunga. Insomma, è stato come entrare in un mondo completamente nuovo per me!
Il paddock era un mondo a sé, una vera festa della velocità. Tra auto, meccanici al lavoro, piloti concentrati e curiosi come noi, c'era anche un gruppo di cheerleader pronte a esibirsi. Non mancava neppure un palco in preparazione, probabilmente per un concerto che si sarebbe tenuto più tardi.

Il mio unico rimpianto? Non aver portato il super teleobiettivo di mio padre! Avrei tanto voluto essere tra i fotografi a bordo pista, con quei zoom giganteschi capaci di catturare ogni dettaglio dell’azione.

Quella giornata a Vallelunga mi ha aperto gli occhi su un mondo che conoscevo solo di sfuggita. L’adrenalina, il suono assordante dei motori, l’entusiasmo del pubblico: tutto ha contribuito a rendere questa esperienza unica. Dubito che diventerò mai una vera appassionata di Nascar, ma una cosa è certa: quella prima gara non la dimenticherò mai!

It was indeed pretty tough and frustrating from time to time to get the shots right; I took so many pictures before getting the right ones, and it was a pity while post-producing, as it took me a long time to select the best ones!
