The City of Love: My Weekend in Verona
Welcome back to my blog, where I share photos from my travels around the world and my trips around Italy. Today, it’s Verona’s turn, the city that became famous thanks to Shakespeare's tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," set right here.
My dear friend Andrea has been living in Verona for a few years; he moved there for work and had been inviting me to visit him for years. It's been over a year and a half since then, but these photos never saw the light of day. So, I revisited them, selected and edited them, and today I’d like to share them with you, telling you a bit about Verona and the places I visited with my friend Andrea.
It was early May 2023, the weather was mild, a bit gray, but it seems that's the typical color of Verona's atmosphere. Andrea took me on an initial tourist tour, visiting the Castelvecchio Museum—well, just the museum walls and courtyard, which actually represent the original Scaliger Castle. Built in the 1300s as a defensive structure, it was converted in the 1920s into a civic museum that now hosts numerous Italian and European artworks. The castle's imposing defensive structure and its walls, elevated above the rest of the city, allow for a pleasant walk. You can cross the Adige River and enjoy views of Verona and its historic center from both sides.
Continuing our tour, Andrea took me to visit Verona's most important churches. Unfortunately, we both have terrible memories and forgot to note the order in which we visited them. Nonetheless, here’s a list of the major churches you shouldn't miss in Verona:

We were true tourists! It was wonderful to explore the city center extensively. The atmosphere was light as we strolled through alleys filled with school groups on field trips, admiring the art that connects all the buildings, bridges, church ceilings, and walls of the ancient city.
In Piazza delle Erbe, the center of the ancient Roman city, there were markets of all sorts and kinds, adding even more color to the already majestic medieval architecture.
Two girls resting by a fountain, from which a pigeon flies away after drinking and refreshing itself; the explosion of shapes and colors at the masks' stall, typical of the Carnival of Venice and, in general, northern Italy: everything brought me serenity, joy, and lightness.
When you finally arrive at the famous Juliet and Romeo balcony, you'll probably find so many people taking pictures that you won't even be able to see it! Here's a secret: this balcony is a historical fake! It has always been mistakenly attributed to the tragedy of Juliet and Romeo, but in reality, it was built by the Cappello family, which has traditionally been confused with the Capulet family, Juliet's family. Nevertheless, the misunderstanding has been maximized, leading to the creation of a real house-museum dedicated to the protagonist of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy.
We continued our tour, but I must say that, being used to Rome, it was very short. In a few hours, we had finished visiting the historic center, at least superficially, and then headed towards Andrea's house, located in the most peripheral area. The next day, a beautiful excursion outside Verona, along Lake Garda, awaited us, and we needed all the energy to fully enjoy the day.
We were eager to visit the famous Tibetan Bridge of Crero [//]:# (!worldmappin 45.65146 lat 10.72487 long d3scr), located near Lake Garda, in the municipality of Torri del Benaco. The trail seemed quite easy and accessible by car. So we borrowed a car for Andrea, drove quite a distance, and headed toward our destination.
It was exciting to return, after so many years, to see the shores of Lake Garda! Exploring a trail that was new to my eyes made everything even more grandiose.
Accompanying the trail were some curious wooden sculptures and structures that seemed abandoned. After about half an hour of walking, we finally reached the much-awaited Tibetan Bridge! It was our first time, and I must say, even though I am not particularly fond of heights, I wasn’t too scared. The bridge is constantly maintained and very safe—just don’t look down while crossing it!
The views from up here were absolutely unique: the lake, the little houses in nearby villages, and abundant nature. Priceless!
After a few kilometers of walking, we arrived at a village that eventually connected back to the trail. We spent quite some time trying to find the correct path for the circular route that would lead us back to the starting point. However, after many hours, we decided to retrace our steps as the sun was setting, and it wouldn’t have been a great idea to remain on the forest trails in the dark.
Once we got back to the car, we returned towards Verona, along the shore of Lake Garda at sunset. I liked photographing the aquatic landscape with that hazy light, thanks to which the shadows of the boats stood out on the surface lake.
The next morning we headed towards the center of Verona to visit the very last glimpses and places of interest that we were missing.
The Verona Arena could not be missed, as well as the walk to the botanical garden and the belvedere, from which to admire the entire city from above.
Verona is quite foggy, but I have to say that I feel lucky to have visited it at a very good time: it wasn't too hot yet and the sun was quite visible through some scattered clouds. In general, if you want to go to Verona, don't expect too much weather favorable!
The botanical garden we saw was located in the Parco di Villa Buri [//] :# (!worldmappin 45.42059 lat 11.04243 long d3scr), a public park located in the south-east quadrant of Verona, outside the center. It is a park that exceeds 13 hectares of land and hosts about 1800 species of plants, including centuries-old trees It is a park much loved by locals who spend their Sundays there having picnics on the lawn, or using the sports facilities made available by the volunteer association that takes care of maintaining the park in collaboration with the local forestry corps. I recommend a short visit to escape from the chaotic historic center and take a breath of fresh air fresh!
As I mentioned before, our last goal could only be the viewpoint. It is usually full of people, but we were quite lucky even in this one. Like almost all the viewpoints in cities, it is located high up and therefore you have to climb quite a few stairs to get to it. reach the best point for observation.
The panoramic terrace of which I report the photos in this post is located on the Belvedere Hill of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourde, very close to the center of Verona. This is the exact location: [//]:# (!worldmappin 45.45458 lat 10.99459 long d3scr)
Going up the stairs to the terrace, you will come across several details that I wanted to include in this post, including a church, an archway on which some writer has written "shall we make love?", perhaps referring to some tourist, some glimpses with trees in bloom and a skull of I don't know what animal, placed on the handrail of the stairs... a bit disturbing to say the least true!

La città dell'amore: il mio weekend a Verona
Ben tornati sul mio blog, dove convidido le foto dei miei viaggi in giro per il mondo e le mie gite in giro per l'Italia. Oggi è la volta di Verona, la città divenuta famosa grazie alla tragedia di Shakespeare, "Romeo e Giulietta", ambientata proprio qui.
Il mio caro amico Andrea vive a Verona già da qualche anno; si è trasferito lì per lavoro, e da anni mi invitava ad andarlo a trovare. Ormai è passato più di un anno e mezzo, ma queste foto non hanno mai visto la luce del giorno, quindi le ho riprese, selezionate, lavorate e oggi vorrei condividerle con voi, parlandovi un pochino della città di Verona e dei posti che ho visitato insieme al mio amico Andrea.
Erano i primi di maggio del 2023, il tempo era mite, un po' grigio, ma a quanto pare è proprio il tipico colore dell'atmosfera veronese. Andrea mi ha fatto fare un primissimo giro turistico, andando a visitare il Museo di Castelvecchio, ovvero, solo le mura del museo e il cortile, che rappresentano in realtà il castello scaligero vero e proprio, risalente al 1300, costruito originariamente come castello difensivo, e mutato poi, negli anni '20 del 1900, in un museo civico che oggi ospita numerose opere d'arte italiana ed europea. L'imponente struttura difensiva del castello e le sue mura che risultano sopraelevate rispetto al resto della città, consentono una passeggiata di piacere, anche attraversando il fiume Adige, così da potersi affacciare dall'una e l'altra parte e godere della vista di Verona e del suo centro storico.
Proseguendo il nostro giro turistico, Andrea mi ha condotto a visitare le più importanti chiese di Verona. Purtroppo, sia io che lui abbiamo una pessima memoria e abbiamo comemsso l'errore di non appuntarci in quale ordine siamo andati a visitarle. Ad ogni modo, vi elenco qui sotto le maggior chiese che non potete perdervi a Verona:

Abbiamo fatto i turisti veri e propri! E' stato meraviglioso visitare il centro città in lungo e in largo: si respirava un'aria leggera, camminando tra vicoli e scolaresche in gita, ammirando l'arte che, come un collante, unisce tutti gli edifici, i ponti, i soffitti delle chiese e le mura dell'antica città.
Nella Piazza delle Erbe, il centro dell'antica città romana, c'erano mercatini di ogni sorta e genere,che davano ancora più colore alla già maestosità delle architetture medioevali.
Due ragazze al riposo al bordo di una fontana, da cui si leva in volo un piccione dopo essersi abbeverato e rinfrescato, l'esplosione di forme e colori del banchetto delle maschere, tipiche del Carnevale di Venezia e, in generale, del Nord Italia: tutto mi dava serenità, gioia e leggerezza.
Quando giungerete finalmente presso il famoso balcone di Giulietta e Romeo, probabilmente trovere tante di quelle persone a fare le foto che non riuscirete neanche a vederlo! Vi svelo un segreto però: questo balcone è un falso storico! Difatti, è stato sempre erroneamente attribuito alla tragedia di Giulietta e Romeo, quando in realtà è stato costruito dalla Famiglia Cappello, da cui probabilmente si è, secondo tradizione, sempre fatta confusione con la famiglia Capuleti, la famiglia di Giulietta. Ad ogni modo, l'equivoco è stato sfruttato al massimo, tanto da creare una vera e propria casa-museo dedicata alla protagonista della tragedia più famosa di Shakeaspeare.
Abbiamo proseguito il nostro giro, ma devo dire che, essendo abituata a Roma, è durato veramente poco. In qualche ora avevano finito di visitare il centro storico, almeno superficialmente, per poi dirigerci verso casa di Andrea, situata nella zona più periferica. Il giorno successivo ci aspettava una bellissima escursione fuori Verona, lungo il lago di Garda, e avevamo bisogno di tutte le energie necessarie per goderci a pieno la giornata.
Volevamo tanto andare a vedere il famoso Ponte Tibetano di Crero [//]:# (!worldmappin 45.65146 lat 10.72487 long d3scr), situato nei pressi del lago di Garda, comune di Torri del Benaco. Il sentiero sembrava piuttosto facile ed agilmente raggiungibile in macchina. Così abbiamo fatto un bel po' di strada con un'auto prestata ad Andrea e ci siamo diretti verso il nostro obiettivo.
E' stato emozionante tornare, dopo tanti anni, a vedere le rive del Lago di Garda! E farlo attraverso l'esplorazione di un sentiero nuovo ai miei occhi, ha reso tutto più grandioso.
Ad accompagnare il sentiero c'erano delle curiose sculture in legno e strutture che sembravano essere abbandonate. Dopo una mezz'oretta di cammino circa, siamo finalmente arrivati al tanto agognato ponte tibetano! Per noi era la prima volta e devo dire che, nonostante io non sia particolarmente amante delle altezze, non ho avuto troppa paura. Il ponte è mantenuto costantemente ed è super sicuro: basta non guardare in basso mentre lo si attraversa!
Le viste da quassù erano assolutamente uniche: il lago, le casette dei paesi adiacenti, e tanta natura. Impagabile!
Dopo pochi chilometri di camminata, si arriva ad un paesino che poi si ricongiunge al sentiero. Noi siamo stati in cammiano un bel po' senza, tuttavia, trovare la giusta indicazione per il sentiero ad anello che ci avrebbe riportato al punto di partenza. Dopo molte ore, infatti, ci siamo decisi a tornare indietro per la stessa via, poiché il sole stava calando, e non sarebbe stata una grande idea restare sui sentieri nel bosco col buio.
Una volta che siamo tornati alla macchina, siamo ritornati verso Verona, costeggiando il Lago di Garda al tramonto. Mi piaceva fotogragare il paesaggio acquatico con quella luce nebulosa, grazie a cui le ombre delle barche spiccavano sulla superficie lacustre.
La mattina successiva ci siamo diretti verso il centro di Verona per visitare gli ultimissimi scorci e luoghi di interesse che ci mancavano.
L'arena di Verona non poteva mancare, così come anche la passeggiata verso l'orto botanico e il belvedere, da cui ammirare tutta la città dall'alto.
Verona è abbastanza nebbiosa, ma devo dire che mi sento fortunata ad averla visitata in un momento decisamente buono: non faceva ancora caldissimo e il sole era abbastanza visibile tra qualche nuvola sparsa. In generale, se volete partire verso Verona, non aspettatevi un meteo troppo favorevole!
L'orto botanico che abbiamo visto si trovava nel Parco di Villa Buri [//]:# (!worldmappin 45.42059 lat 11.04243 long d3scr), un parco pubblico situato nel quadrante sud-est di Verona, fuori dal centro. E' un parco che supera 13 ettari di terreno e ospita circa 1800 specie di piante, tra cui alberi secolari. E' un parco molto amato dai locali che lo vivono spendendo le domeniche facendo i pic-nic sul prato, oppure utilizzando le strutture sportive messe a disposizione dall'associaizone di volontari che si occupa di manutenere il parco in collaborazione con il corpo forestale locale. Consiglio una breve visita per evadere dal caotico centro storico e prendere una boccata d'aria fresca!
Come menzionavo prima, il nostro ultimo obiettivo non poteva che essere il belvedere. Solitamente è pieno di gente, ma siamo stati abbastanza fortunati anche in questo. Come quasi tutti i belvedere delle città, è situato in alto e quindi bisogna salire un bel po' di scale per raggiungere il punto migliore per l'osservazione.

Salendo la scalinata verso la terrazza, incapperete in diversi dettagli che ho voluto includere in questo post, tra cui una chiesa, un passaggio ad arco su cui qualche write ha scritto "facciamo l'amore?", magari riferendosi a qualche turista, qualche scorcio con alberi in fiore e un cranio di non so quale animale, posto sul corrimano delle scale... un po' inquietante a dire il vero!

Todas las fotos son muy bonitas (y son muchas jaja) pero hay una que es la más me gustó de todas.
Está. Y es qué me parece curioso y bastante nuevo para mí ver una estructura con un diseño de este estilo con franjas (jamás había visto algo así). Las mascaras también me gustaron y los ponys 😆, se ven muy lindos y más porqué uno está sonriendo (o eso parece) y el como cierran los ojos también me gusta.
Editaste muy bien las fotos, no se vé para nada exagerado y se capta muy bien todo. No creo que un día sea suficiente para recorrer todo eso a profundidad. Qué lugar tan bello e histórico

This kind of stripes-styles is very typical of the Romanic and Renaissant period in the Italian religious architectures, such as church and bell towers. They alternate various types of marbles, which usually are the ones easily retrievable in the local region.
The animals were so cute, you're totally right! And they were also friendly, in that public park in Verona.
Thank you for noticing that I do not exaggerate with editing: indeed, my style has always been to use editing only to correct technical issues, rather than to change radically the nature of the photos.
There are many shots in this blog post, you're right. But consider that this was the summary of a 3-day trip, so I couldn't really take out more shots 😂 I think each shot carries a memory of mine, and sometimes it's hard for me to make a strict selection of all the photos I take during my trips.
