With @altheana, we do not particularly like Valentine's Day. We are part of those people who say that it is above all a commercial celebration. There are two schools of thought on this subject, but we do not judge either of them, and we do not wish to be judged either.
That being said, it is always pleasant to be surprised by small attentions. Whether they are daily or not, Valentine's Day remains a great opportunity to make an extra effort. And this year, it fell on a Friday, perfect for spending time together.
After our workday, we had to do some shopping for the famous weekend aperitif. On the way, we made a stop in a low-cost store because we had in mind to do some painting for Valentine's Day. A fun activity to do as a couple, which we had never tried together before.
So, we bought two canvases, some paint, and pencils. The whole thing cost us around 5 euros, which is about the same in dollars at the moment. In other words, not much at all.
After the aperitif and a good meal, we got started. We each had a small idea in mind of what we wanted to paint.
On my side, I wanted to paint lemons. This summer, in Corsica, between our lodge and the beach, we walked past a lemon tree, and regularly, lemons would fall to the ground. We picked them up to cook with. This canvas should help me not to forget this good memory.
@altheana, on the other hand, chose to paint flowers. She really likes them, and I must say that I do not mind that either.
My drawing skills are a bit rusty, it had been years since I last drew. But the important thing was not performance, it was mostly about sharing a moment together. So, I decided to set aside my perfectionism.
I started by painting the lemons. And bingo, there was exactly the right color for me: "lemon yellow."
At that moment, with @altheana, we were a bit worried. The paint was very transparent, and our pencil strokes were still very visible, despite the prior erasing. Clearly, it was not enough.
To give more depth to my lemons, I tried mixing two different yellows, which allowed me to add some shadows.
I then moved on to the leaves, but the paint was too liquid. With each brushstroke, it slid over the canvas. I do not really know what it could be due to. Is it because we bought low-cost paint? To be sure, we would have to try with other brands.
I wanted to stop there, but something was missing. On top of that, @altheana had not finished yet. So, I did several tests to try to find a background color that would go perfectly with the yellow of the lemons and the green of the leaves.
After several attempts, I finally found the right one!
It was 2:30 AM when we finished, but we were really satisfied with the result. The fact that it is not perfect proves that it is handmade, and in the end, that is what we were looking for. It will make a nice decoration for our home!
I think we will do it again from time to time. Painting is truly a relaxing activity.

Avec @altheana, nous n'aimons pas particulièrement la Saint-Valentin. Nous faisons partie de ces personnes qui disent que c'est avant tout une fête commerciale. Il y a deux écoles à ce sujet, mais nous ne jugeons aucune des deux, et nous ne souhaitons pas être jugés non plus.
Cela étant dit, il est toujours agréable de se laisser surprendre par de petites attentions. Qu'elles soient quotidiennes ou non, la Saint-Valentin reste une belle occasion de redoubler d'efforts. Et cette année, elle tombait un vendredi, parfait pour prendre du temps ensemble.
Après notre journée de travail, nous devions faire quelques courses pour le fameux apéro de fin de semaine. Sur la route, nous avons fait un arrêt dans un magasin bon marché, car nous avions en tête de faire de la peinture pour la Saint-Valentin. Une activité sympa à faire en couple, que nous n’avions encore jamais testée ensemble.
Nous avons donc acheté deux toiles, de la peinture et des crayons à papier. Le tout nous a coûté environ 5 euros, soit à peu près la même chose en dollars actuellement. Autant dire pas grand-chose.
Après l'apéro et un bon repas, nous nous sommes lancés. Nous avions chacun une petite idée en tête de ce que nous voulions peindre.
De mon côté, je voulais faire des citrons. Cet été, en Corse, entre notre gîte et la plage, nous passions devant un citronnier, et régulièrement, des citrons tombaient au sol. Nous en ramassions pour cuisiner avec. Cette toile devrait m’aider à ne pas oublier ce bon souvenir.
@altheana, quant à elle, a choisi de peindre des fleurs. Elle les aime beaucoup, et je dois dire que ce n’est pas pour me déplaire non plus.
Mon coup de crayon est un peu rouillé, ça faisait des années que je n’avais pas dessiné. Mais l’important n’était pas la performance, c’était surtout de partager un moment ensemble. J’ai donc décidé de mettre mon perfectionnisme de côté.
J’ai commencé par peindre les citrons. Et bingo, il y avait pile la couleur qu’il me fallait : "jaune citron".
À ce moment-là, avec @altheana, nous étions un peu inquiets. La peinture était très transparente, et nos traits de crayon se voyaient encore beaucoup, malgré le gommage préalable. Visiblement, ce n'était pas suffisant.
Pour donner plus de relief à mes citrons, j’ai essayé de mélanger deux jaunes différents, ce qui m’a permis d’ajouter quelques ombres.
Je suis ensuite passé aux feuilles, mais la peinture était trop liquide. À chaque coup de pinceau, elle glissait sur la toile. Je ne sais pas si c'est dû à la qualité de la peinture ou simplement à la toile elle-même. Pour en être sûr, il faudrait tester d'autres marques.
Je voulais m’arrêter là, mais quelque chose me manquait. En plus, @altheana n’avait pas encore terminé. J’ai donc fait plusieurs essais pour trouver une couleur de fond qui s’harmoniserait avec le jaune des citrons et le vert des feuilles.
Après plusieurs tentatives, j’ai enfin trouvé la bonne !
Il était 2h30 du matin quand nous avons terminé, mais nous étions vraiment satisfaits du résultat. Le fait que ce ne soit pas parfait prouve que c'est du fait main, et finalement, c’est ce que nous recherchions. Ça fera une belle décoration pour chez nous !
Je pense que nous recommencerons de temps en temps. La peinture est vraiment une activité relaxante.
